ToTo: Falling in Between Live
by Reg Seeton

Within an ever-changing music scene, current and long forgotten bands should rest easy knowing what the power of the Internet can do for their careers. Although a lot of bands are scrambling to keep up with the download generation, the Internet can do wonders to re-energize a fan base. Case in point, my recent reintroduction to ToTo, one of the greatest bands from the '70s and '80s.

So, here's how it all started...

A couple of weeks a go I was taking a break from The Deadbolt on a Saturday afternoon and looking for a bit of retro-cool to brighten up the day. After searching around the info highway, I stumbled upon the video for "Africa" by ToTo, a defining band and song from my coming of age in the '80s. Just before hitting "play," I noticed a ToTo promo spot on the right side of the page. It read ToTo: Falling In Between Live DVD 2007. So I asked myself the obvious question - "Was ToTo still together and touring after all of these years?" After checking the band’s official website, I quickly learned ToTo was indeed touring and have been for quite a while.

Although the band's gone through several makeovers over the years, ToTo is alive, well, and has never sounded better... EVER! In fact, after checking out their new Falling In Between Live DVD, ToTo is by far the best hidden gem of a band American concert-goers are missing out on... AND probably won't see for a while, if ever again. That's right. While stateside music lovers suck up the latest bubble-gum rock from today’s one-hit wonders, ToTo has been selling out stadium after stadium in the UK, Asia, Australia, and beyond. Why tour the attention deficit, Ritalin crowds in North America when you can actually be appreciated overseas? Hell, even Eddie Van Halen called ToTo the best collective of musicians on the planet. Add to that, ToTo even won six Grammy awards in one night back in the '80s and they’ve been making music ever since.

In 1998, after a 15 year absence, power vocalist Bobby Kimble re-joined original founding ToTo member and lead guitarist Steve Lukather while in 2003 veteran keyboardist and vocalist Greg Phillinganes replaced the great David Paich. After playing with and knowing the band for several years, Phillinganes was THE perfect replacement for Paich. Not to mention the fact that Greg Phillinganes is one of the best keyboardists of all time, having worked with several of music's legendary greats that include Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and Aretha Franklin. Since 2003, Paich and other original members have sporadically returned to the line-up for a few special gigs along the way. Although the changes would have killed many an average band, ToTo has seamlessly adapted to keep their sound alive. When Bobby Kimble rejoined the band, it was the smartest move the band could have made. Kimble is simply one of the best, most underappreciated power voices in rock history. Throw him back into the mix with one of the greatest guitarists in Steve Lukather and you've got one hell of a band.

In 2006, ToTo released their first new album of original material in seven years called "Falling in Between". After the release, ToTo hit the road for a world tour, which recently came to an end in April 2008. The same month on April 1, 2008, ToTo released the live Falling In Between Live DVD companion, which was recorded last year at the sold out LeZenith show in Paris in March 2007. If you’ve never plugged yourself into ToTo, or you haven't checked out ToTo in years, Falling In Between Live is THE perfect introduction, or reintroduction, to one of the best bands on the planet.

Consisting of 20 live performances that span four decades and 10 albums in the career of ToTo, Falling In Between Live is loaded with classics, lesser known but still kick-ass songs, and several great new tracks from their complete history. Out of the first four performances, ToTo gets the new songs out of the way - "Falling In Between," "King of the World," and "Bottom of Your Sould" - before clearing the way to "Pamela" (The Seventh One - 1988), "Caught in the Balance" (Mindfields - 1999), the awesome blues based "Don’t Chain My Heart" (Kingdom of Desire - 1992), the amazing classic "Hold the Line" (ToTo - 1978), "Hydra" (Hydra - 1979) and several more diverse tunes in the ToTo discography. Highlights of the Paris show, aside from adrenaline charged crowd, include a soft intro to "Rosanna" where guitarist Steve Lukather teams with Bobby Kimble on the classic ToTo IV hit before bringing the house down with the original version, an amazingly trippy rendition of "Isolation" from the band's 1980 album of the same name, "Don’t Chain My heart" with Lukather on lead vocals that'll remind you of the late, great Jeff Healy, the power anthem "Hold the Line" which Kimble nails pitch perfect, and the ToTo IV classic "Africa" with Greg Phillinganes on vocals, which sounds just as "Serengeti-ly" smooth as the original with David Paich.

Also included on Falling In Between Live is a fantastic series of behind the scenes, backstage interviews with the band - Tony Spinner, Leland Sklar, Simon Phillips, Greg Phillinganes, Steve Lukather, and Bobby Kimble. Each one of the band members offers their own unique insight into the band and how they contribute, from Lukather revealing all of the guitars in his arsenal and Bobby Kimble explaining why he left the band and returned 15 years later to Greg Phillinganes and all of the complexities that go into playing "Rosanna" live from a keyboard perspective. After watching the interviews, it's clear that ToTo appreciates their loyal fan base, has a deep passion for making quality music, and has no trouble giving something back to those who still love the band. If you're a true rock fan, you’ll be keen on and appreciate each candid interview.

ToTo Falling In Between Live is an amazing live DVD from an amazing band that you might not know is still rockin’ the world and sounding better than ever. Go pick it up, you won’t be sorry. Hopefully, after Lukather recently revealed it doesn’t make sense for the band to tour the U.S. anymore, the members of ToTo will change their minds and come back to North America.
