We got a press release from Fox today that announced the title and a little bit of the plot of the new adventures of Mulder and Scully in this summer's sequel to The X-Files. The film, opening on July 25th, will be called The X-Files: I Want To Believe. Really? Can't we still just call it The X-Files 2? Fox announced the official title today for the film, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, produced by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz, written by Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz, and directed by Chris Carter.
Fox also dropped a very little bit of information about the movie, the plot of which is still heavily under wraps, especially for a flick that's opening in just over three months - "In grand X-Files manner, the film’s storyline is being kept under wraps. This much can be revealed: It is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show’s most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the complicated relationship between Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully ( Anderson ) in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, ferociously intelligent physician, remains inextricably tied to Mulder’s pursuits."
Released almost a decade ago on 6/19/98, The X-Files made $83.9 million domestically and another $105 million overseas for nearly $200 million worldwide. Directed by Rob Bowman, a regular director on the Fox show, the first X-Files was a pretty big hit critically and, clearly, financially profitable, which led many to wonder why it took ten years for another film to get released. And now just as many will wonder if it's too little too late. Maybe they should call it "We hope to still believe."
