Ozzy Lusth on Getting Blindsided in Micronesia
by Troy Rogers

As the fans and favorites on this season's Survivor have left Micronesia one by one, the competition has tightened and the survivors are becoming more focused on the top prize. After becoming one of, if not the strongest player in the game this season, Ozzy Lusth received a big surprise when the tribe cast their final votes at Tribal Council. Although most viewers knew Ozzy was an odds-on favorite to be one of the final two survivors in Micronesia, his tribemates finally realized how much of a threat Ozzy was to their individual games and sent him packing via the proverbial blindside.

Did Ozzy see it coming? The day following last week's episode of Survivor Micronesia, The Deadbolt caught up with Ozzy for an exclusive chat about his ultimate fate and who he wanted to be sitting next to had he made it all the way.

THE DEADBOLT: When it was all said and done, you got a bit too comfortable and confident the other night.

OZZY LUSTH: You think?

THE DEADBOLT: So how much of a shock was it?

OZZY: On a scale of what?

THE DEADBOLT: On a scale of 1 to 10.

OZZY: 75 million. [laughs]

THE DEADBOLT: You seemed somewhat less confident when you went into the vote. Did you have an inkling it was going to happen?

OZZY: Yes, I thought there was a chance. I had to take a risk and see if I could make it one more tribal council, and I couldn’t. The rules of the immunity idol changed and you had to play it in between the voting and having the votes read, so it’s really a gamble any way you look at it. If you play it and you weren’t right, the next time you go you’re pretty much done. I should have played it and it’s a mistake I made. I know - shoulda, coulda, woulda.

THE DEADBOLT: Did you try that funny Betel nut stuff?

OZZY: Yeah, I did. It’s like island crack. You saw Erik, he threw up. He couldn’t handle it. It’s kind of like a stimulant like nicotine or chewing tobacco.

THE DEADBOLT: When Jason won the immunity idol last week, you looked like you were in rough shape. Can you walk us through what happened?

OZZY: Basically, once the water had gotten up over my face, I had a really good breathing system going and I didn’t know who was left over. I thought maybe it was James. But he was on the opposite end of the bars, so I went underwater to see if I could see where they were and who was left. That was my mistake, because when I went back up the water was just too high and I couldn’t get a good seal. Water kept dripping down and I was friggin' drowning. I just had to bow out and that was it. I couldn’t get my hand to seal back over. I should have known that would happen, but I thought James was still in it. I couldn’t see what was happening and I should have stayed until it was over.

THE DEADBOLT: If everything had gone the way you planned, who would you have wanted to be sitting next to at the end?

OZZY: I didn’t care.

THE DEADBOLT: Not a numbers game, man or woman?

OZZY: I honestly didn’t care. I just wanted to make it as far as possible. In all honesty, it probably would have been someone like Jason or Erik. That would have been ideal. But really, it could have been anyone. Maybe Cirie would have been the worst candidate; she’s a really liked person and she would have had the best chance of winning against me. But I knew that I had to try to get farther in before I started thinking about that.

THE DEADBOLT: Who do you think is going to take it?

OZZY: I think Chet is going to come back from the Loser’s Lodge and take it all. That’s next week’s twist.

THE DEADBOLT: When you switched the immunity idols, that was a brilliant move. What were some of the highlights that we didn’t see from this season?

OZZY: There are a few different things that didn’t make it to the air that had to do with fishing, exploring the island, building different traps, midnight coconut runs, just stuff like that. None of it made the tube.

THE DEADBOLT: What’s it like the first few days when you get back to the States?

OZZY: It’s weird, but it’s not that weird. It’s just good to sleep in a bed again. The first time was more culture shocking, but the second time you’re more easily adaptable.
