Play All 4.29.08
by Brian Tallerico
The DVD market is a little light this week (and, actually, for most of May too) but there are still a few titles that might have slipped below your radar while you were marking off your calendar waiting for this week's release of 27 Dresses. Some people just don't dig cutesy romantic comedy, serious French drama (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), or talking polar bears (The Golden Compass). Play All is here for you. Don't worry - there's still a DVD for you this week and it might even feature Doris Duke, Goofy, Cliff Clavin, or Brenda Walsh. It's another weird week at Play All. Enjoy.
Bernard and Doris
Studio: HBO Films
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Susan Sarandon, and James Rebhorn
Features: Audio Commentary with Director Bob Balaban, "Growing Up Rich: The Real Doris Duke"
If you're like us, you're almost never familiar with the Best Movie or Mini-Series awards at the annual Emmys. Most TV movies are so bad, we don't waste much of our time with them and use those categories as bathroom breaks. But wouldn't it be nice to actually be familiar with a few of the nominees? You can bet the house that HBO's John Adams is going to a multiple nominee, but another, less publicized, likely multi-nominee hits DVD this week called Bernard and Doris, a great acting showcase for two of the best - Ralph Fiennes and Susan Sarandon. The Oscar-winning actress plays Doris Duke, an eccentric tobacco billionairess who put dozens of staff members through their paces over the years with her overly demanding behavior. One of those servants was named Bernard Lafferty, played by Ralph Fiennes. An unconventional bond formed between the rich princess and the pauper-level servant, who didn't have a penny to his name when he arrived at the Duke mansion. Bernard and Doris is a virtual guarantee to pop up at this summer's Emmys and next year's Golden Globes. Check it out and impress your friends when the Movie or Mini-Series categories come up by actually having seen one.
Beverly Hills 90210: Season Four
Studio: Paramount
Starring: Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, and Brian Austin Green
Features: "A Look Back with Charles Rosin", "The Loves of Season 4", "Beverly Hills Moms", "Everything You Need to Know About Beverly Hills 90210 Season 4", "90210 Genre Benders", and "7 Minutes in Heaven"
Brenda leaves! It took four years for everyone to get tired enough of Shannen Doherty's behavior to the point that she had to leave the show and this was the legendary season that it happened. That means you Doherty fans can now get all of the 90210 seasons with your favorite actress on DVD. Tiffani Amber Thiessen fans will have to wait a while. Ironically, the last season that featured Doherty was also 90210 in its prime. According to Wikipedia, this season was the highest rated overall in the history of the show, ranking 37th, an incredibly good performance any year, but especially for the still young Fox in the early '90s. 90210 helped define the network and it's not a coincidence that the struggling CW is developing a spin-off of the series. The series is still influencing shows like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill and, as much as its haters might not want to admit it, 90210 is an important part of the TV fabric. One particularly great note of trivia - the show that is so closely defined by the '90s ran from 1990 to 2000. Check it out in its prime with the fourth season on DVD this week.
Cheers: Season Nine
Studio: Paramount
Starring: Ted Danson, Kirstie Alley, Woody Harrelson, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, Kelsey Grammer, and Rhea Perlman
Features: None
Cheers is one of the best shows ever made, a series that changed the landscape and if I could only have one non-animated series to watch for the rest of time, there's a very good chance it would be the boys in the Boston bar where everybody knows your name. (And it probably finishes second all-time only to The Simpsons on my list of personal favorites.) Cheers is perfect. And, perhaps even more amazingly, it was perfect for eleven seasons. In today's market, most TV series seem to lose steam after just a couple years. Cheers survived a major cast upheaval and ran for over a decade. Much is made of how Cheers wouldn't survive in today's cutthroat market because it took a while to find an audience, finishing last in its first season, but not enough is made of how flawless the series was for so very long. In Play All, we're often referencing "the prime of a series." Cheers was in its prime for a DECADE. Pick any season. Why not the ninth, a year when the show not only finished number one at the end of the year but also took home an Emmy for Kirstie Alley and another one for Best Comedy Series? It hits DVD this week and it rules.
Classic Caballeros Collection
Studio: Disney
Starring: Goofy, Donald Duck, and Walt Disney
Features: "Backstage Disney: South of the Border", Walt Disney CBC Interview (Excerpt), "Don Donald", "Contrary Condor"
Two movies in one! And they're Disney movies! You couldn't do better for the kid or the kid at heart in your family this week than the Classic Caballeros Collection, a new mouse house DVD with Saludos Amigos and its sequel The Three Caballeros. There's an entire generation that barely remembers a pair of Disney adventures south of the border or maybe just have a vague image of Goofy in a serape. Or maybe you're old enough to actually remember these two 1940s flicks from the golden age of Disney. Saludos Amigos may not stand next to Sleeping Beauty or Snow White but it is an important part of the Disney legacy, a film that came just after Dumbo and Bambi and was popular to even warrant a sequel two years later. The 6th and 7th films in the official Disney canon, Saludos Amigos and The Three Cabelleros are must-haves for anyone eager to complete their Disney collection of DVDs, some of the most consistent performers in the medium. And how often do you get two Disney movies for the price of one?
