Celebrating Mother's Day with "King of the Hill" Mom, Kathy Najimy
By Troy Rogers
With Mother's Day on the near horizon, King of the Hill might be the perfect way some moms would rather spend the final hours of their day. Airing on Sunday, May 11 at 8:30pm on Mother's Day, King of the Hill returns with another episode in the weekly adventures of the Hill family, as Hank and Bobby get in some father and son bonding time when Hank dumps the old team of Dale, Bill and Boomhauer to help Bobby in a boat-building competition before being spooked by a bunch of bats in "It Came From the Garage".
To celebrate Mother's Day a bit early this year, The Deadbolt caught up with the fun and lighthearted voice of King of the Hill mom Peggy Hill, actress Kathy Najimy, on a recent conference call with a few select outlets to find out what makes both Peggy Hill and Kathy Najimy tick, her upcoming role in Pixar's Wall-E, her love of Boggle, and more.
If you haven't found a mother's day card yet, head this way for a few animated ideas from King of the Hill.
THE DEADBOLT: What have you learned about Peggy over the last eleven years?
KATHY NAJIMY: . That’s a really good question. I have learned actually quite a bit from her. I’ve learned that a family can have little glitches without being labeled dysfunctional. Just sort of watching and being part of the Hill family, they get into these little scuffles and make wrong decisions. Then, the next moment, they’re all sitting around the table with Luanne eating pork chops like nothing ever happened. It’s just a lovely metaphor for "Forgive and Forget". Certainly, she needs to be forgiven and forgotten, several times. I think that, at the core of this family, there is a real respect and love - is really moving to me. And funny, you know? I think that everyday situations that the writers come up with are - that’s why this has been on for so long. When people ask me, "What do you think the secret to the long-term success is?" I think because they are funny without being disrespectful and mean and that we certainly see ourselves in it. Also, they’re pretty far ahead of the game as far as subjects. Like, we’ll do a script in King of the Hill, and then I’ll start reading about that in the paper six months later. I’ll say, "How did they know there was going to be an abstinence-only topic happening?".
THE DEADBOLT: Do you play a lot of Boggle in your spare time?
NAJIMY: I play Boggle constantly. I have no idea how they knew that because I came, I think it was the third episode ever, twelve years ago. I read that Peggy was a Boggle champion. I almost jumped out of my skin with excitement. I think Boggle is my favorite game. This summer, we were lucky enough to be at the beach all summer. I played more with Boggle than with my kid. I love it a lot.
THE DEADBOLT: What can you tell me about your experience in Wall-E?
NAJIMY: I play a character named Mary. I actually haven’t seen the movie yet. I’m seeing it on the 20th. I was so honored to do it. Are you kidding? When my agent called and said, "Pixar," I just said, "Yes" right away. I know that there's not a lot of characters. I believe there’s only about five human characters in it. It’s a combination of animation and a little tiny bit of live action.
