Fraggle Rock: The Movie
May 13, 2008

Who's ready for Fraggle Rock: The Movie? What if we told you it was a live-action musical version courtesy of the Weinstein Brothers? Yeah, we're slightly terrified too but you have to admit that it's going to be interesting. According to today's Variety, The Weinstein Company will turn the Jim Henson series Fraggle Rock into a live-action movie and the film will be helmed by Cory Edwards, who made the animated Hoodwinked! for the studio. The film will be produced by The Jim Henson Company and will be distributed by TWC.

The Fraggle Rock movie will feature, like the show, a mix of puppets and human characters. According to Variety, Harvey Weinstein has been trying to move his company into more family-friendly fare and he himself brokered the Fraggle Rock deal with Lisa Henson, who is currently running the Henson Company with he co-CEO brother Brian Henson. Interestingly, the film will be executive produced by Brian Inerfeld and Ahmet Zappa. Weinstein told Variety, "One of our main priorities when we first launched the Weinstein Company was to feature a broad range of family-friendly franchises like Fraggle Rock."

The Fraggle Rock movie will feature the core characters Gogo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober, and Red, after they head out of their home in Fraggle Rock and interact with humans who think they are aliens. The original series aired on HBO in 1983 and ran for five seasons. The first three seasons were recently released on DVD and did very well.

Cory Edwards is also working on Escape From Planet Earth with Hoodwinked! co-writer Tony Leech, who will make his directing debut with the movie. He's also working on a live-action feature adaptation of Cedar Fair's Halloween Haunt franchise, which will be shot in 3-D.
