Sylvester Stallone Sounds Off on Myanmar
May 14, 2008

After returning to the cinematic spotlight over the past two years with the final Rocky movie and the fourth film in the Rambo franchise, actor Sylvester Stallone stepped back onto the world stage in the last week to share his thoughts about the human rights, humanitarian crisis in the country of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

After stopping in Japan to promote Rambo, Stallone sounded off on the indifference shown to its cyclone ravaged people by the government of Myanmar since the film's story sees John Rambo lead a group of missionaries out of the Burmese jungle and away from the oppressive Burmese military. As Reuters recently reported, Stallone looks to the positive contribution of Rambo amid recent events, "I think what's going to come out of this devastating cyclone, and the fact that our film has made it much more apparent of the violence that these people live under, I think there's going to be great social change in that country because they can't hide any more."

It's no surprise that Rambo has been banned by the government of Myanmar, but U.S. moviegoers will soon be able revisit the film on DVD when it hits store shelves on May 27.
