Will Indy Break the Memorial Day Record?
May 23, 2008

Now that Iron Man, Speed Racer, and the new Narnia movie are all in theaters together, will the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise beat all three of them to set record Memorial Day numbers at the box-office? Given the palpable adventurous hype surrounding Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it’s not a stretch to think Indy’s latest adventure could surpass the $173 million domestic five-day total set by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. If it doesn’t outpace Revenge of the Sith, will the new Indy beat out the second place record holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest at $170 million? How about Spider-Man 3, which raked in an impressive $169 million of its first five days at the box-office?

According to USA Today’s Scott Bowles, who recently spoke to a rep from the industry tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, reviews of the film should help to bolster momentum for the film, but also raises the interesting question of whether Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be seen as a disappointment if the movie doesn’t break the record. While it’s still too early to tell, Bowles also ponders a deeper query, “The question, analysts say, is less whether Indy will make a grand entrance than whether he'll stick around for long.”

Given the $4 million gap between the current top three record holders, it’s still hard to predict where Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will fall after Memorial day.
