Burn Notice Season 2 with Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell
By Troy Rogers

After a successful first season playing "burned" secret agent Michael Westin on USA Network's Burn Notice, actor Jeffrey Donovan is back in Miami gearing up for a second season of investigating the reasons behind his character's mysterious firing. As well, fan favorite actor Bruce Campbell is also gearing up for another season of boozing, womanizing, and enjoying life post-espionage as he helps Donovan's Michael Westin navigate the unpredictable world of Miami while being connected to the FBI.

With Burn Notice about to make its second season return on July 10 at 10pm on USA, we followed the secret trail to a conference call where we found Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell, who filled us in on how Burn Notice will stack up for a second time. Campbell assures fans there... "ain't gonna be no slumping."

THE DEADBOLT: Bruce, I hear you and Sharon Gless will be drinking together in season two. Have you two been hitting the bottle as research?

BRUCE CAMPBELL: Well, we are both method actors. We’ll just leave it at that. No, I think what’s been fun is that with any show you’re going to have to get all of these characters working together. So I’ve got some upcoming stuff. In fact, we shot a bunch of stuff with Sharon and it’s really fun just to see the different dynamics between the characters. And Sam is stuck with Fiona more this year, as well as Michael, so I think we’re sort of spreading the love. And it’s really fun to work with all of the other actors and Sharon’s one of the great TV icons, so nothing wrong with that.

THE DEADBOLT: Since so many people knew you as Ash, what’s it like to have a whole new generation of kids that only know you from Burn Notice or even as the Old Spice guy?

CAMPBELL: It’s kind of hilarious. I think it’s very refreshing to have a guy come up and go, ‘Man, I had no idea who that old guy was on Burn Notice until I found out later what you had done.’ So it’s okay to get fans retroactively. But most important right now, Jeffrey and I want to make sure we please fans of the current show and hopefully we’re doing that.

THE DEADBOLT: Jeffrey, after doing your very first scene in the car with Sharon Gless, how did you guys manage to connect as mother and son?

JEFFREY DONOVAN: Well, I give a lot of credit to the writers, they’re really plotting our relationship out. And every week there’s a new shade to Michael being revealed to his mom and vice versa. I've got to give a lot of credit to the writers to opening up that relationship and it’s easy to act with Sharon, she’s one of the best.

THE DEADBOLT: How do you relate to Michael’s dilemma of being stuck in Miami?

DONOVAN: I love his dilemma. I love Miami, I love South Beach, and I love the weather even when it’s storming and looking like we’re all going to be electrocuted on our camera truck. It’s awesome.

Other Conference Call Highlights:

Jeffrey Donovan on the MacGyver type inventions on the show:

"Well, you’d have to ask Matt Nix. Actually, he’s the one who came up with the idea of a guy who was MacGyver-esque, but you actually believe he can do those things. So everything we do in the show, you actually can make at home. Matt keeps a couple of the ingredients out of the bombs, just so no one blows up little Timmy.

Bruce Campbell on getting more female fans:

"I’m not getting anything here in Miami. My wife is a very good ally in that respect. I don’t need to go method here, so everything is all under control here in Miami. I’m just standing back in awe of Mr. Donovan."

Donovan on Michael’s relationship with Fiona:

"That’s a crazy relationship that’s going to have its ups and downs and it’s going to go left, right and all around, and it’ll be exciting. Some of the episodes I actually don’t read until I get on the day just so I can see what crazy things she’s going to do to me that day."

Campbell on whether he’s worried about becoming a huge star if the show becomes really popular:

"Yes, I’m terrified. And, as a matter of fact, I have put plans in place to sabotage the show."

Campbell on his latest movie:

"I have an actual movie called My Name is Bruce coming out this fall. And I’m even in it, too, in more than a cameo. It proves to the world that I can memorize more than seven lines of dialogue at a time."

On what it was like to direct My Name is Bruce:

"Well, it was pretty difficult directing myself, because I got in raging arguments with myself all day long. As you know, I’m pretty difficult. So that’s really the biggest trouble. Next time I’m going to do the sequel without Bruce."

Jeffrey Donovan on putting what he’s learned as Michael Weston into practice in his personal life:

"Well, I live out in the woods in California and there are a lot less rodents there from what I’ve learned from Burn Notice. No one can break into my house anymore. And if they do, I put up a sign - it say’s, ‘I don’t call 911.’"

Donovan on the reason for so much yogurt in the show:

"It was just something that was put in my fridge by Matt. It’s Matt’s crazy insane mind and, for some reason, every time I open the fridge in the script it said 'all there is is yogurt'. And then when Sam joins me, it’s beer. So all I’m living on is yogurt and beer and that’s how I stay so thin."

Campbell’s thoughts on the scripts he’s seen so far:

"Ain’t gonna be no slumping. Ain’t gonna be no sophomore slump, my friend. People are still finding the show and I’ve had the weirdest batch of e-mails from people from very odd demographics who are following the show. The DVD is coming out, USA knows it’s a hit now, so they’re going to promote it more. We’re all behind it. So I don’t know. I think we’re doing sixteen episodes instead of ten or eleven, so there’s every reason to believe, in my opinion, in my ignorant opinion, we’re going to do even better this year."

On the status of his Bubba Nosferatu project:

"The truth of the matter is, I couldn’t come to an agreement with the filmmaker about what type of sequel we wanted to make. So we thought it was best, rather than jeopardize what I consider to be a good friendship, we let it go. So it fell apart and I don’t think it will come back together again."

Bruce Campbell on whether Sam needs a more solid relationship this season:

"I think Sam just needs some action. I think it’s been really fun working with Audrey Landers and we’re going to see where that gets taken a little bit in season two. We’re going to get a little more of that. But then Sam may be in a position to bust out again, you never know. That’s all I can say without killing you."
