Getting Animated with 'King of the Hill' Mom Kathy Najimy
By Troy Rogers

Who ever thought that animated shows in primetime would be so successful? I mean, we all knew some would take off, but could we ever have predicted some would last over a decade, even decades? After The Simpsons became a huge hit for Fox, a new era of sitcoms was born that allowed a variety of comedic minds to put their talents to use in animation, including writer/director Mike Judge (who also created Beavis and Butthead) and actress/comedian Kathy Najimy (who recently voiced a character in Pixar's WALL-E). Now heading into its 13th season, Mike Judge's King of the Hill is still going strong with Najimy in the role of Peggy Hill as it returns to the airwaves on Sunday, September 28.

So what can we expect in Season 13 of King of the Hill and the Hill family matriarch, Peggy? To find out, we took a call from Kathy Najimy to find out what characters will be coming back, whether Peggy's Spanish is getting any better, and one answer we've been dying to know for years - Will any of the animated characters ever grow old like the rest of us, or will they always stay the same age?

THE DEADBOLT: Bobby and Joseph have gotten older over the years but it doesn’t seem like the adults are aging at all. Is there talk of eventually giving you guys grey hair and making you look older?

KATHY NAJIMY: Oh, that’s so funny. I hope they give Peggy a face lift. But, no, the characters stay the same age. It’s interesting, I’ll ask them about Bobby. But I think the intention is - Although he has graduated from high school, you’re absolutely right on that. Joseph is older - they even went and changed actors in the middle because Joseph’s voice went down - but I’m hoping Peggy doesn’t age. Look, I have to deal with that in my real life, I’m not going to deal with that in my cartoon life as well. [laughs]

THE DEADBOLT: In the upcoming episode about Bill having diabetes and using an unnecessary wheelchair, I'm curious about what Peggy will be doing?

NAJIMY: I think Peggy is used in this episode as sort of a sounding board, and I’m sure she has - The greatest thing about Peggy is that she always has this great advice that is, well, she’s sure of it. There’s something really comforting about how sure she is about her flaws, but I don’t really remember. I’m sure she is going to be an expert on whatever it is.

THE DEADBOLT: For the second episode where Strickland is accused of dumping propane tanks in the river, why doesn’t Peggy use those old tanks to make more sculptures?

NAJIMY: Oh, my God, you are good! Nice use of history; that’s fantastic. Well, you know what I want to do is use Ed Begley Jr. as a voice on there, because he’s a friend of mine and he’s Mr. "green universe," he saves the planet. So wouldn’t it be fantastic to have an Ed character against Hank? That would be hilarious, it’s so funny.

THE DEADBOLT: Have you been asked to do commentary or anything for the Season 7 DVD? The reason I ask is because Season 6 came out two years ago and we haven’t had one since.

NAJIMY: You know what? I’ve got to get a pencil because you’ve got a good list of things for me to do [laughs]. Yeah. WHAT are they doing? You’re absolutely right. You need to be a producer, we need you. I’ll tell you what - on the Season 7 commentary I’m going to say the name Troy. I’m going to fit it in and you’re going to know it’s you and you’re going to know I did my job.

THE DEADBOLT: The last time we spoke, it was around Mother’s Day and you still hadn’t seen Wall-E. So what did you think?

NAJIMY: I thought it was really good. Did you like it?

THE DEADBOLT: I thought it was awesome; probably Pixar’s best movie to date. Although I still really like Nemo a lot.

NAJIMY: Yeah, I thought it was great. I was really surprised. You know, I’m sort of a point-of-view-woman - I like when there’s... People go, ‘We don’t want anything with a message.’ And I think, ‘Why not? As long as it’s fun or dramatic or riveting or compelling, what’s wrong with a message?’ So I really loved that part of it and was surprised by how brave Pixar was to jump in there. And then plus, I just laughed a lot and, God, people have been freaking out. They’re saying, ‘Oh, it’s going to be nominated for an Oscar.’ Not in the animation category, but against real movies. I got to get a gown.

THE DEADBOLT: Do you know what happened to Cotton’s wife Didi and G.H.?

NAJIMY: She comes back.

THE DEADBOLT: Okay, because when he died she just disappeared and no one explained anything.

NAJIMY: Okay. One of the episodes is that they find Cotton’s last wishes and it involves them doing almost sort of a scavenger hunt type thing to fulfill all of his wishes, because Hank feels like he needs to do it. And Didi comes back and it’s a great episode. I can’t tell you what finally happens with his ashes, but I can say it’s in a place where - It happens in the bathroom. But that’s really good of you, Didi comes back. But what does happen to G.H.? I’m reaching for a pen because I have to write all of your suggestions down.

THE DEADBOLT: Aside from Peggy who is your favorite character on the show?

NAJIMY: My favorite character on the show? Okay "Mr. I Remember Characters," how about this one? Do you remember when Bobby was in the chubby boy fashion show?

THE DEADBOLT: Yeah, with the short pants.

NAJIMY: The photographer, who was voiced by Dave Herman? That photographer I would give a million bucks for him to come back. That was so funny to me, and I make Dave do it all of the time. I love almost all of Dave’s characters. He's like Hank Azaria on The Simpsons. Dave does a lot of our voices. It’s one of those where you don’t think about it and you just laugh from your gut and he makes me laugh. So I would say a collection of Dave Herman’s characters.

THE DEADBOLT: Is Peggy’s Spanish getting any better?

NAJIMY: Es-pa-nole. You know, the funny thing is - I’m born and raised in San Diego and we're right on the border and so, if anything, I have this false pride about my good Spanish pronunciation. Like my husband is always making fun of me because we go through Taco Bell and I’ll say, ‘I’d like a burrrrrito and a cassidia.’ And he’s like, ‘Just say it right.’ But that she mispronounces? It pains me in my heart every time and I’m the one who thought of it, too. And you know what? A lot of people comment on it.

THE DEADBOLT: Do you use any of her mannerisms or sayings in real life like, ‘Oh, yeah!’?

NAJIMY: Yeah. I love ‘Oh Yeah!’ But more than that, she said something in an episode once where she went, ‘Oh, for Christmas tree,’ instead of for Christ’s sake, which may be offensive to some people. So for some reason I just said ‘Oh, for Christmas tree’ and I say it about twice a day.
