Reliving Survivor Gabon with First Castaway Michelle Chase
By Troy Rogers
After sixteen seasons of global expeditions to some of the world's most beautiful locales, CBS' Survivor returned for a seventeenth adventure on Thursday in the African country of Gabon (aka: "Earth's Last Eden"). Eighteen castaways were broken into two tribes - Fang and Kota - and the new season of Survivor scheming got underway. After a couple of grueling immunity and reward challenges, the Fang tribe was beaten handedly by Kota, leaving the losers demoralized and tribe members already at each other's throats. In the middle of it was 24 year old Michelle Chase from L.A. who ended up alienating herself from her tribe members. When the first half of Thursday's two-hour Survivor was over, Chase was the first to be voted off Survivor Gabon after a heated exchange with Fang mates.
The morning after the premiere, we caught up then ex-Survivor Michelle Chase to see how she felt about her departure, how she felt about her former Fang tribe mates, and who she thinks might survive the longest. As well, our own Troy Rogers asked Michelle about some of the unknown dangers in Africa, and her answer just might surprise you.
THE DEADBOLT: It’s amazing how a guy can give up during a challenge yet you were the first one up the hill, and the same guy that gives up ends up becoming the leader of the tribe. What else was going on behind the scenes that led to you being voted off?
MICHELLE CHASE: As far as behind the scenes, I don’t think anything happened that you didn’t see. I think that they just used the fact I was cold at night and small and looked like I was weak. You know, when I’m freezing cold. Who doesn’t look weak when they’re freezing cold? It was just - You know, the older people played that a lot just to save their own asses.
THE DEADBOLT: Were you surprised that no one even suggested voting off G.C. after you were gone?
MICHELLE: No. After I was gone, I mean, I didn’t understand why they didn’t vote Gillian off the first time. I mean her, Randy and Susie are completely useless to the tribe. I mean you didn’t see G.C., his competitiveness. I mean the whole Fang tribe has like no competitive edge, which you need to have when you’re in a challenge. You don’t stop in the middle of a challenge. But G.C. does have a work ethic and he was doing a lot around camp. So, no, it didn’t surprise me at all that they didn’t talk about voting him off.
THE DEADBOLT: What did the termite taste like?
MICHELLE: [laughs] I couldn’t tell you because actually I swallowed it like a Tylenol. But, you know, I did burp and I had this kind of sulfur taste and smell.
THE DEADBOLT: When you were going into Africa, what did they warn you about? What was the most dangerous element to this season?
MICHELLE: Not having face wash.
THE DEADBOLT: Really?
MICHELLE: Yeah, did you see my face on TV? I had like ten zits.
THE DEADBOLT: That’s not really dangerous, though.
MICHELLE: Well, I guess we have different descriptions of danger and me being caught on HDTV with ten zits is my danger.
THE DEADBOLT: What do you think the secret is to surviving the first week?
MICHELLE: You know, I don’t know because I didn’t even make it a week. [laughs] Ask Parvati or someone that made it a week, I really don’t know.
THE DEADBOLT: I don’t know if it’s too early to speculate, but who do you think might go all of the way?
MICHELLE: I think - I mean I want to root for Ken because he was like my buddy. So I think he could go pretty far, go all of the way. I definitely think he wants that title of Survivor and I think he would do whatever it takes to get it.
THE DEADBOLT: Now that you’ve had a taste of this would you be up for joining another reality show or maybe even [doing this] this again?
MICHELLE: I would do it again and I would do another reality show, but it would have to be a really cool one. I mean, I can’t go from Survivor to Wipeout or something. You know, it would have to be something cool. I wouldn’t do The Bachelor or anything dumb like that. But if it was physical and living up to the standards of Survivor, yeah, I would do it again.
THE DEADBOLT: Just as long as there is face wash.
MICHELLE: [laughs] Yes, as long as I can bring my facial regimen along with me.
