Masi Oka Talks Season 3 Heroes, Villains, and Hiro's Mother
By Troy Rogers

For the past two seasons on NBC's Heroes there were heroes who wanted to save the world and villains who stood in their way while some, namely Sylar, absorbed the powers of the good and bad. Now that Heroes is back in its Monday night slot on NBC's roster, it's all about the bad guys this year in the third volume dubbed "Villains".

In the third episode of Season 3 airing Monday, September 29, "One of Us, One of Them", four villains lay siege to a bank while Hiro and Ando are off to Germany to look for Daphne. To get the goods on the latest episode of Heroes, we tracked down hero/Hiro Masi Oka to a conference call where he filled us and other journalists in on how he'd react if we found out that Hiro was a villain, how Hiro's powers will evolve this season, if his father will be playing some type of role, and whether we'll ever get to see Hiro's mother.

THE DEADBOLT: What would you do if we found out Hiro was a villain?

MASI OKA: Oh, I don’t know. I would go and smack some sense into Hiro and be like, ‘What are you doing?’ Hiro is one of those - Like I mentioned, I think he’s very pure and the naivety has gone away, but he’ll do what he believes is right. And sometimes what he believes might not be the right thing. I would think he’s very susceptible to a lot of things, very gullible. But he would never do anything that’s morally wrong in his mind because he follows a basic conduct of heroism and he goes by the bible of the comic books.

With that being said, we’ve seen what happened to the heroes who’ve gone to the dark side, so... You know, it’s interesting because hero and villain is very relative. What is good and what is evil? Because in the villain’s mind what the good people do, that’s evil in their minds. So maybe from a society perspective it’s clear what’s good and what’s villain. But from a personal perspective, from a villain’s perspective, is very different how they see the world. So it’s an interesting moral question. But I have faith in Hiro that he’s always in his heart is always going to be a good guy no matter what he does.

THE DEADBOLT: The last time you caught up with Adam Monroe, [Peter] Petrelli stopped you from killing him. How would you kill him if you got him alone since he’s immortal?

OKA: The way Hiro kind of encased him was pretty cold. I mean, in retrospect he just put him in the coffin. Actually, the way it was edited, it just made it a very dark decision. There was actually a lot more to that based on what we had and the ending and stuff. But because of the writer’s strike and the way it was edited it just seemed like a really harsh decision that was made. How? I mean, we’ve seen that everything is kind of related to the spinal cord in terms of immortality, and even when we saw Claire kind of going to a state of mortality in that sense. So maybe that’s the way to kill Adam Monroe?

Other Conference Call Highlights:

Masi Oka on whether they’re making all of the heroes a little darker this season:

"I think so. I think the writers wanted to introduce a little bit of a different dynamic between Hiro and Ando to start things off. We will see them back to their original selves hopefully very soon. But I think everyone’s kind of like - Because this is the volume called 'Villains', we wanted to put in seeds of doubt in terms of every relationship we’ve had and kind of shake up the status-quo. So I definitely think that’s an intentional part by the writer’s to put that in."

Oka on what power he would like to have instead of Hiro’s:

"Can I cheat and say Peter’s power? Because he can do everything."

On whether he still does CGI work on the side:

"Unfortunately it’s been increasingly difficult to do some stuff. I’m technically still an ILM employee so I’m hoping to. I’m actually kind of involved in producing a couple of projects that involve CGI. So I’m hoping to use my employee discount when that rolls around."

Masi Oka on whether Hiro’s power will change in volume three:

"Possibly. The writers are definitely very creative about how Hiro uses his power. It’s a very strong power, you know, so theoretically Hiro could just go back in time and fix everything. So it’s very difficult in terms of plot, because it’s like, ‘Okay, Daphne stole a paper. Why didn’t Hiro go back five minutes earlier and make sure he doesn’t have it yet?’ There are always ways around it unfortunately. But to end the point, Hiro doesn’t go back in the past because he knows it’s going to destroy the timing of what will happen.

"In terms of powering up, I don’t know how much more Hiro can really power up teleportation and time travel. I think he’s more accurate with his time travel now, so that’s something. And with teleportation, maybe he can go a little bit further? I mean, just having more control over them. But there may be a couple of things that are different in terms of how he uses the power. Maybe he can do a dimensional warp? Maybe we could have Hiro teleport to Mars or something? That’ll be season four."

On whether fans come up to him on the street and think he has super powers:

"Yeah, sometimes they do. It’s quite interesting. The most awful times are - I hate to be crass in the morning, but when you’re in the restroom, and I’ve had fans recognize me, and they’ll come into the restroom with me and then they’ll watch me take a leak. And if you’re watching, it’s like, ‘You know, it’s not like my urine stops time or anything. Can we please not stare at me while..." But it is kind of interesting, though. Sometimes they don’t think I can teleport but people do ask me to do things. I personally think I can stop time because every time I go into a room and tell a bad joke, man, time freezes. It feels like a long time."

Oka on the fun side of his character being lost last season:

"I don’t know if it was completely lost, we interjected it where we can. In feudal Japan there was a lot of fun we had with the Kensei dynamic. When we got back, it was very grave when he found out about his father’s death. And when you deal with your father’s death, it’s kind of difficult to make light of that. We try to incorporate - It is a comic book style of storytelling, so we do want to be able to put in light moments where we can when appropriate. We may have lost it a little bit, but at least as an actor and the writer, we are conscious about throwing it in there when we can, throwing little Easter eggs or jokes here that lightens the mood, because there is humor. Even when in tragedy it’s a way of release of laughing at the tragic stuff, laughing at ourselves and being able to celebrate life."

Masi Oka on whether Hiro’s sister returns or if we get to see his mother:

"Family is always important to Hiro. There are so many things. But the most important is his family and his friendships and of course being a hero and saving the world. But that’s what his family has taught him, his father in particular. And his mother has taught him the values of being a good person, a good servant to civilization. So not having his father there giving him advice, fortunately we saw the advice come through a DVD. But we might still see some fatherly advice from his father kind of like how Obi-Wan and Anakin come back in Return of the Jedi to give Luke some advice. We haven’t - To be honest with you, I don’t know what Hiro’s sister is doing. I would presume she’s very busy running the company. Like Hiro is the CEO and Kimiko is kind of the president so she is a day to day hand’s on person. So we haven’t seen her yet but we will see Hiro’s mother. When, I don’t know. It might be season six, but we will see Hiro’s mother."
