Eliminated Biggest Loser Jerry Skeaback is Living Healthy
By Troy Rogers
When the weigh-ins were all said and done on the most recent episode of NBC's The Biggest Loser Families, Cleveland police Sargeant Jerry Skeaback, 51, was eliminated from the third episode. Although Jerry endured a brief health scare, he then faced an unexpected challenge. When it was time for the elimination, only one family was being sent home while the other would remain. The morning after his elimination, we were eager to talk to Jerry on a conference call to find out what he thought about the surprise twist, how he feels in his new healthy lifestyle, and what he would have done had he won the R.V. that the show gave away... which went to Ed.
THE DEADBOLT: What were your initial thoughts when you found out that only one team member would be going home?
JERRY SKEABACK: You know, that’s kind of crazy. We concentrate so hard on just making the team effort and when that popped up, that was like a total surprise. And it just [gave] everybody something more to think about. And when it did come up, it was highly stressful to make that decision.
THE DEADBOLT: After dropping so much weight, what is the major difference with your body aside from your physical appearance?
JERRY: Well, I noticed that when I got on my motorcycle it didn’t say "one at a time". Basically, the appearance was a big issue of it, because how you look and feel is a big issue with everybody. But when it comes to it now, the physical capabilities I have now I haven’t had in twenty years.
THE DEADBOLT: What is your current weight?
JERRY: Right now I’m 298lbs.
THE DEADBOLT: Had you won the R.V., would you’ve been able to fill it with gas or would it sit in the driveway?
JERRY: Sit in the driveway, near the dog.
THE DEADBOLT: Before The Biggest Loser, what was your favorite guilty pleasure food-wise?
JERRY: Oh, pasta. And lots of it. Oh, I’m a pasta freak. I used to love it.
THE DEADBOLT: Are you still able to eat it?
JERRY: Limited. I do it, a little bit more educated now. I go with wheat pasta and I’m very careful with my servings and my intake of pasta and I make sure I do some serious burning after I eat it.
Other Conference Call Highlights:
Jerry on going back home and maintaining a healthy lifestyle on his own:
"Well, you know, actually that was not an issue. It’s like if you want to get your health back it’s like a war. You got to win it. And that was all that was on my mind - ·I gotta do this. I’m gonna do this, and it’s gonna be done.· And failure was not an option."
On the biggest change since returning home:
"Well, the biggest change was breaking habits. I had some really bad habits and the bad habits that I created went to obesity. When I was with the B.L. - What happened with the B.L was this: I changed my habits, I changed my lifestyle, and I’m positive. The results are overwhelming when it comes to health and nutrition. I mean, I just feel so good."
Jerry on being labeled the most unfit person ever on the show:
"Well, it is what it is, you know. This is not a show that is over here creating something that didn’t happen. It’s something that I created. And the lifestyle I created for myself, it led the obesity, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and all of that other crazy stuff. It is what it is and you can’t - This is why we have so many problems in this fast food society, life of convenience, because we don’t want to get up off of the couch. And a lot of people don’t want exercise, don’t want to eat healthy. It is what it is. How did I feel about it? I felt that they were telling the truth, and what you see is what you get and the end result is obvious."
On getting support from his fellow cops at work:
"The support has been overwhelming. The chief of police here has been more than supportive and the family of the police department has really come together. And we used to talk about doing the crazy things in our lives and now we talk about health , nutrition and working out, and getting crazy and picking up our workouts. To sit there and tell you I was going to do this a year ago, much less six months ago, I would’ve told you were crazy. But now you’d die laughing hearing all of the people talking about it."
On how his health has improved since being on the show:
"I went out there on four blood pressure medicines and I don’t have any blood pressure medicine now. I’m medicine free, as they say. Now my sleep apnea caused a heart arrhythmia over the years, which they discovered, and I don’t have any of that anymore. And I just wake up and look at this good looking guy in the mirror everyday and, 'Wow!'"
Jerry on what went through his head at the last weigh in when he realized he gained two pounds:
"Actually, it was complete shock, and a lot of things were explained to me afterwards. You know, how the weight gain occurred, which [there's] nothing like a good education when you got Dr. Huizenga in your corner. But it was complete shock. You almost wanted to like die. It’s crazy."
