Season 2 Fraternity Life with 'Greek' Star Scott Michael Foster
By Troy Rogers
Now that Greek is in its sophomore run on ABC Family, the rivalry between Scott Michael Forster's Kappa Tau Gamma Prez "Cappie" and Jake McDorman's Omega Chi Delta "Evan" has evolved in the show's second season at Cyprus-Rhodes University. In the world of fictional fraternities, life inside the traditional Greek system is filled with as much drama as the outside world. Now that Greek has finally found its audience on Monday nights on ABC Family, some of the pressure's off the cast of college students as they deal with pledges, parties, love and life on campus.
With Greek's second season in mid-semester, we tracked down Michael Scott Foster to find out what Cappie's up to in Season 2 and where he sees him going in to the future.
THE DEADBOLT: So what is Cappie’s major?
SCOTT MICHAEL FOSTER: Cappie’s major? As they’ve said in previous episodes, Cappie’s had quite a bit of majors and he switches all of the time. I guess he’s the kind of person who wants to know everything about everything. So he takes on all subjects.
THE DEADBOLT: Will Rusty’s dating skills ever catch up to Cappie's?
FOSTER: [laughs] I think that’s the goal. I think that’s Cappie’s goal, to get Rusty to open up and get - You know, Rusty is a little brother, not just a fraternity aspect but an emotional aspect for those two. He wants to see him become the suave guy that Cappie is, so who know? That’s Cappie’s goal.
THE DEADBOLT: So Rusty is kind of like his Padawan I guess?
FOSTER: Yeah, exactly.
THE DEADBOLT: How long do you see the show lasting and how will it evolve, because you can’t stay in college forever?
FOSTER: Well, you know, Cappie’s whole philosophy is that you can stay in college forever. He wants to at least. This is that time of his life as he sees it. So I don’t know how long the show will go. I hope it goes as long as the people want to keep seeing it. We’ve got a really awesome core fan audience so I think it can go for as long as people want it to.
THE DEADBOLT: How are you and Cappie similar?
FOSTER: I admire the aspect of living for today. I mean, that’s great and that’s what the character is all about. So I definitely agree with life is too short to worry about the small stuff.
THE DEADBOLT: You get a lot of great dialogue. Do you get to contribute to that or is it just reading what’s on the page?
FOSTER: You know, for the most part we stick to the script. I mean, if we ever have any fun with the scene sometimes they keep it, sometimes they don’t. But I can understand with editing and trying the show at the timeline they want to keep it at. But yeah, sometimes we get to have fun with the lines and it’s all very natural.
THE DEADBOLT: When Cappie’s college days are over where do you see him ending up?
FOSTER: I don’t know. I can definitely see Cappie owning something on the beach, having some sort of little business on the beach selling tacos and beer at a resort in Cozumel and just living out his days on the beach. I can totally see that.
THE DEADBOLT: If you didn’t play Cappie, what other character would you like to play?
FOSTER: You know, I can’t really see myself playing another character on the show. When I tested for the show I tested for the role of Calvin so in the beginning I saw myself as that character. But as I started playing Cappie more and more I realized that was the role for me. So I don’t really see myself playing another role.
THE DEADBOLT: What can you tell us about Ashley’s Ashes?
FOSTER: Ashley’s Ashes was a film a friend of mine starred in and asked me to do and I play a role that has a couple of scenes in the film. I don’t really know much about it except that it’s a great script and I know they’re in post production now. But I don’t know when it’s going to come out or anything like that. It’s about a guy who inherits an urn anonymously from someone, with someone’s ashes inside and he doesn’t know who. It has the whole movie with him in the city of Los Angeles trying to find out who left him this urn. It’s pretty funny.
