If I could only have a handful of comedies to watch for the rest of my life, Young Frankenstein would be one. I think it may be second all-time comedies for me after another Mel Brooks flick, Blazing Saddles. Both Blazing and Frankenstein are flawless, consistent laughers with the power to make me smile over and over again. One exchange in particular in Young Frankenstein sums up my feelings for the movie. Read it out loud - "Werewolf." "Werewolf?!?!" "There." "What?" "There wolf. There castle." It's a dumb, dumb joke but it makes me laugh every single time. And I've seen Young Frankenstein probably a dozen times. That's what's great about it and Blazing Saddles, Airplane, Animal House, and other comedies that I adore - they are immensely rewatchable and they make me laugh every single time. Sadly, a lot of classic comedies don't get the treatment they deserve on DVD or Blu-Ray. Young Frankenstein is an exception. This is a must-have for all movie fans, a Blu-Ray full of new interviews, featurettes, and more that all fans should see. Here's the best way to put it - as I said, I adored Young Frankenstein. The Blu-Ray release from Fox makes me love it even more.
Gene Wilder gives his best performance in Young Frankenstein as a relative of the legendary doctor. A spoof of the classic horror movies of Karloff and Lugosi, Young Frankenstein is a classic. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay, on nearly every list of the best comedies of all time, on the IMDB Top 250 movies ever made as voted by users, and picked by the AFI as one of the top 15 funniest films of all time, Young Frankenstein is almost universally adored. The film is still so popular that Brooks recently turned it into a musical that may not have had the same success as The Producers but still played to sold-out crowds. In 2003, The United States National Film Preservation Board deemed Young Frankenstein "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. Don't take my word for it. Take everyone else's too.
"I look beautiful now. Before Blu-Ray, I looked very much like Charles Laughton in The Hunchback of Notre Dame." That's Mel Brooks kicking off a great series of new Blu-Ray exclusive interviews about the making of the film that can be accessed picture-in-picture while you watch the movie. New interviews with people as diverse as the daughter of Boris Karloff, Mel Brooks, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, and many more are simply riveting. But that's just the tip of the special features iceberg. You can listen to a commentary by Brooks himself, watch several featurettes, outtakes, archival interviews with Marty Feldman, Gene Wilder, and Leachman, 25 minutes of deleted scenes, and much more. Fox released a great Mel Brooks box set a few years back but it was surprisingly light on special features. They've made up for it with this amazingly impressive collection, one of the most extensive series of extras that I've ever seen on a comedy. You'll spend hours with it. And laugh the entire time.
