Love, Hate, and Celebrity with Molly Shannon and Selma Blair of 'Kath & Kim'
By Troy Rogers

After becoming a hit down under in Australia, Kath & Kim found its way Northwest over the seas to the Wednesday night NBC airwaves with former Saturday Night Live regular Molly Shannon and Hellboy actress Selma Blair as the dysfunctional Floridian mother-daughter duo Kath and Kim Day. Although Shannon's Kath is looking for love in her forties with a sandwich shop owner, Kim is a recently divorced pop-culture princess who moves back in with mom.

In a day and age when the cult of celebrity is everyone's obsession, fans might get to see the likes of Cher, Britney, and a few more big names drop by the set of Kath & Kim for possible upcoming guest roles.

Shortly after the NBC announcement that Kath & Kim earned nine more episodes to make a full season, we tracked down Molly Shannon and Selma Blair, along with the show's executive producer Michelle Nader (King of Queens), for a quick chat on a conference call to talk celebrity obsessions, wardrobe, and Molly Shannon being a former mall rat.

THE DEADBOLT: Selma, I was wondering about Kim and her obsession with celebrities. How much fun is it to play that part of her since you’re actually - in real life you’re on the other side?

SELMA BLAIR: Well, that’s kind. I don’t really think of myself that way. So, yeah, no, it’s really fun. I mean sometimes it’s a little scary when we get a script and it’s like, "Oh, no, I’m friends with that person. We can’t say that," you know? I mean, Kath and Kim are really never malicious or anything. They love celebrities. But sometimes it gets a little creepy for me. But no, it’s really fun to play it and it’s really fun to sit on set and look at those magazines. They’re very entertaining.

THE DEADBOLT: Do you ever draw on anything from your personal experience for the character?

BLAIR: Yeah, part of Kim is based on someone that I grew up with and kind of her - like how juvenile she is and how loud and everything. But yeah, we’re kind of figuring it out still.

THE DEADBOLT: Are Kath and Phil destined to get married or is that just something that’s always going to be talked about?

MOLLY SHANNON: They are definitely going to get married. There’s going to be a wedding in the episode coming up so there will definitely be a wedding. Right, Michelle?

MICHELLE NADER: Oh yeah, right.

THE DEADBOLT: So it’ll be Kath, Kim and Phil living together?

SHANNON: Kath, Kim, Phil and possibly Craig - everybody.

THE DEADBOLT: I’ve read the U.S. show was originally supposed to be in Phoenix. So why the move to Florida?

NADER: Actually, that was with a different writer. There was a draft of the script before I started on the project and it was Phoenix. And for me, Florida just felt more the place for this odd group of people and a mall culture. And I know Florida. But more, I’m from Philadelphia so I know the East Coast a little bit more than I know the Midwest. So that’s why we’re there.

Other Conference Call Highlights:

Selma Blair on whether she was a fan of the original Australian show:

"No, I’d never watched the show. I think it’s great, but I don’t really even equate this - I don’t really compare this show to that one or anything like that - that they have a great show and ours kind of took the essence of it and [we're]paying homage to it. And it’s definitely our own show. And I hadn’t heard of it until this show brought it to my attention."

Selma Blair on whether Kim has ambitions in life other than being aware of all the celebrities in the world:

"I hope so. I do hope - you know, I think there has to be an underlying truth in a reality to Kim. And I think it’ll come out in small parts. You know, there has to be some substance. But yes, she really hasn’t found it. We're in the really baby stages of it and I’m in the baby stages of doing with this character what I would hope to do, and hopefully the network will eventually play whatever I’m doing. It’s a little too risqué, I guess, so we’ll see. We’ll see what happens with Kim."

Michelle Nader on possible upcoming guest stars:

"I mean we just had Maya Rudolph who was hilarious in a role. And there’s talk of Britney Spears and because she - that’s sort of the same thing and we’re trying to do a story where Kath and Kim go to Las Vegas to see the Cher show. So I really do like Cher. I guess that’s pretty much obvious now."

Molly Shannon on sticking to the script and ad-libbing:

"Lately we’ve been - we mostly stick to the script. But once in a while we’ll do like an extra take or two and just improvise a little. But mostly we just stick to the script."

Nader on whether we’ll see any other SNL alumni on the show:

"I mean, well, probably because they’re all funny and we love getting funny people - I mean we had Dave Koechner on. He was on SNL for a bit. And Maya is in an unbelievably funny role as a sort of a spiritual guide. She helps Phil lose all of the weight and then Kath has a problem, and she goes to see her. And they have this sort of girl crush on one another. It’s really funny and we’re already planning to bring her back. So yeah, she was great for us.

"But not right now, we don’t [have concrete plans] - You know, we’re just sort of trying to get ahead on this week, but maybe down the line. We have a lot more scripts to do."

Blair on her character’s wardrobe:

"Right now I’m wearing like the equivalent of a mullet for an outfit. I’m wearing the shortest red polyester shorts with a full-on like business suit top. No, like a full-on business. It’s business on top, party on the bottom, and it is ridiculous. I don’t want to take any of this wardrobe home ever - ever. I’m not going to be like Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City and build like an extra closet for like my extra pieces or get storage space. It’s not in my contract. But it is like putting on a Halloween costume every day. It’s really over the top and it’s really a fun character to get into for sure."

Shannon on being a mall rat:

"When I was in high school, I did - Yeah, we used to go [and] take the rapid transit downtown. That wasn’t a mall. But then there was also a mall that we’d go to that had like Spencer’s Gifts. Do you guys remember that store? You could buy fart spray. And then also Chic-Fil-A. The delicious Chic-Fil-A with chicken filet samples and the smoothies. Yeah, so I would say I was a mall person when I got into high school."
