Backstage at the Golden Globes: Steven Spielberg Looks Back at Life
by Jordan Riefe

What more can anyone say about the career of Steven Spielberg? You can look back at the career of one of Hollywood's greatest directors and easily say that a quarter of Spielberg's films are some of the best in the history of cinema. Although the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to honor Steven Spielberg by giving him the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contribution to the entertainment field at The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards, by no means has Spielberg called it a career since he's actively involved in directing or producing any number of seven upcoming projects.

After receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globe ceremony in L.A., we were on hand backstage when Steven Spielberg stopped to address the press and share his feelings on life and career, what keeps him going at 62, the status of his upcoming Abraham Lincoln pic, and whether he'll be revisiting Indiana Jones in the future.

Steven Spielberg on how he looks back at his movies after receiving outstanding achievement awards:

"Well, when they flash the film package of all of the movies, the first thing I think about really is - Did I have kids then? How old were they? What grade were they in? You know, all of these movies are kind of like little measurements in the road having to do with my entire life. Not just my life making those movies, but my life in life. And so for me, when I see something like that, it’s like a photo album. Not so much my experience making the movies, which it also is, but where I was in my private life, my personal life. That always occurs to me almost first."

Spielberg on choosing Martin Scorsese to present the Cecil B. DeMille award:

"You chose Martin. Somebody at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose Martin. It was a wonderful surprise when I heard that Marty was presenting this to me."

On whether he still feels the same fire inside at 62:

"Yeah, the fire hasn’t gone out. The fire is actually intensified, because in a sense I don’t feel like I have to prove anything. So, in a way, that doesn’t mean I’m making pictures for anyone other than whatever intuition happens to visit me on a Tuesday, let’s say, when I get an idea, when I read something that inspires me. So I think that I have actually more ambition now than when I was younger. Don’t know why that is."

On what's happening with his Lincoln project, about late President Abraham Lincoln:

"It’s coming together really quickly. It’s looking wonderful. I’m not here to make an announcement about whether I’m making [it] this year or not, but it’s coming together very fast and I have my fingers crossed.

Spielberg on whether he'll be revisiting other characters in his career in the same manner as Indiana Jones:

"You mean like bring them out of mothballs? No. No, not really. I don’t have any plans to really do that. I mean, some day there may be another Indiana Jones. I can’t say when, but I said that fifteen years ago and it took fifteen years to make Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But George [Lucas] and I have had a couple of conversations about what if we made another Indy film. But we’re not in any position now to say that we’re definitely doing that."

Steven Spielberg on whether he feels it was a good year for the film industry and for directing:

"Yes, it was. It was a really good year. I think it’s one of the most exciting years in terms of a diversification of subject matter and emphasis on character this year. And I’m really happy to see that The Dark Knight is making a last minute run at recognition, because I was very happy to see Heath [Ledger] win tonight and looking forward to some more Dark Knight momentum. I think that balances everything out wonderfully. It was a wonderful movie. But this was a good year for pictures.
