5 Reasons Why New Moon Could be Better Than Twilight by Nadya Vlassoff
In 2008 Twilight became an international box office hit, making over $356 million dollars worldwide. Based on the first book in the series written by author Stephenie Meyer, Twilight gave fans and Summit Entertainment their money’s worth with an almost $70 million opening weekend, which nearly doubled the $37 million production budget. Numbers aside, Twilight generated mainstream interest in the remainder of the upcoming adaptations - New Moon and Eclipse - with a newly heightened anticipation already swelling amongst fans of the novels and the first film, which launched the beginning of what’s sure to be a lucrative, fan friendly franchise.
Moviegoers who went into Twilight without reading the books before seeing the film pushed sales of the original Twilight novel back into the top ten bestsellers list. Since the release of Twilight in November 2008, press and fan-buzz for the sequel New Moon has been mounting since a development deal was confirmed and casting for New Moon began. All the original actors are on tap to star in New Moon, with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson set to reprise their roles as Bella and Edward respectively.
In the sequel, New Moon brings fresh characters to the story and raises the importance of others already established, namely Jacob Black who was introduced in the first movie. However, with New Moon already in production in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Twilight sequel could see a few more already established young actresses in 90210 star AnnaLynne McCord and 15-year old Hollywood veteran Dakota Fanning. Although McCord and Fanning haven’t been officially confirmed for roles in New Moon, only currently “in Talks”, it’s been reported that Dakota Fanning is circling the part of Jane, a new character introduced in the second novel.
With a new director in Golden Compass helmer Chris Weitz, who replaces Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, New Moon will indeed be “new” to fans in several ways, including the continuation of an increasingly intricate story. And when it comes to the online buzz surrounding the Twilight sequel, there’s no shortage of speculation as to how New Moon will shape up.
Although Twilight didn’t strike quite a favorable nerve with critics and it left some hardliners of the novel feeling like the film had not done the book justice, the stakes are definitely higher for the sequel.
Here are 5 reasons why we think New Moon could be better than Twilight:
New characters, new conflict:
The benefit that most sequels have is that the main characters and their relationships have already been established. This leaves the door open for deeper exploration of the story and characters as the each actor has grown into the roles. For an actor, it is all about the interpretation of a character on paper and the transfer of emotion to the screen. A novel can describe emotion, feelings, and settings but a film has to show it. In the case of New Moon, fans should feel more of what they felt from the books now that Twilight is out of the way and the story can unfold.
In New Moon, Bella and Edward’s relationship has already been established. But, like any relationship, the introduction of secondary conflict can play an important role on the dynamics of love. Without giving too much away, beyond Edward and Bella, the impact Jacob has on the story creates simultaneous conflict. Loyalties will be put to the test while the choices of right and wrong are pitted against those of want and need. Much like a second book in a series of novels, New Moon will cut to the chase in a way fans can already identify with via new character dynamics while delving deeper into the complexities of love.
Starlet in Shadows: Dakota Fanning?
With casting for New Moon in full swing, there’s been much buzz surrounding the possible addition of a highly recognizable name in Hollywood for the role of Jane. Dakota Fanning, former child star turned critically acclaimed young movie star, is only 15 and yet Fanning has more experience in the industry than her possible New Moon co-stars combined.
Dakota Fanning has worked alongside such A-listers as Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington and Sean Penn and knows the acting world inside and out. If cast in New Moon Fanning would be the biggest name attached to the film, even more than her recently popular Twilight co-stars. Although many fans have questioned whether Fanning for role of Jane is the right choice, Dakota brings to the table a masterful range of emotion and a wealth of A-list experience. But will her star power overwhelm her co-stars? What we do know is that she can act and the addition of Dakota Fanning could only raise the acting game of the entire cast to make them better. How well fans receive Fanning as Jane may be a different story.
Digging deeper in the name of love:
Stephenie Meyer herself wrote about how much the character of Edward had cemented his own personality and character in such a way that changing his essence would be like changing his physicality. It could not be done. Edward’s role in New Moon is as much about his character as it is a necessity in the relationship he has with Bella. No great love story would be complete without a special, magical bond that’s sometimes painful on many levels and it doesn’t get any better than with a love-struck teenage girl and a broody vampire.
The success of New Moon over Twilight lies in the ability of actors to inhabit their characters on a deeper level. What Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson bring to Bella and Edward for New Moon will require more than just reading lines from a page. Twilight showed us the magic of an inevitable love story and New Moon will continue the saga in a richer manner. It’s the love story that will force Pattinson and Stewart to go deeper inside themselves as actors than they did in Twilight. Usually when people reach deep and go beyond their comfort zones, good things happen. In this case, it will all be in the name of love.
Setting the new mood:
Although Twilight was filmed in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, mainly in Washington St. and Oregon, heading north to Vancouver, British Columbia can only benefit in a couple of ways. First, Vancouver is perfect for the tone and atmosphere of New Moon since it rains so much that Robert Pattinson will feel at home among “Vampouverites.” Although Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver all fit the franchise well, the dreary scenery in Twilight was able to set the tone of the novel, bringing to life the plight of the characters while creating a setting that befitted Edward and Bella’s relationship both internally and externally. Vancouver will bring that in broody spades.
Second, with the slumping economy director Chris Weitz and crew will get more mileage out of the American dollar in exchange, which should afford the production a few more tricks and effects that Twilight wasn’t able to incorporate purely for financial reasons. Who knows what cost savings will add to New Moon, but it’s better than not having enough to work with.
Half of the mystery of Edward and his family lies in their ability to live in shadow and Vancouver provides the perfect backdrop with cloaked forests and overcast skies. Let’s just hope the crew can keep the rabid fans off the set.
The Quileute Tribe and the Legend:
Jacob Black was originally intended to be a stand-alone character in Twilight but his role in New Moon is more significant, as the underlying conflict between werewolves and vampires comes to the forefront. The Quileute legend speaks of its people being descended from werewolves, with the lore based on real Quileute legends except for the introduced conflict with the vampires (or "cold ones" as Jacob describes them). With the arrival of the Cullens, legend and lore allow fans to journey deeper into the mythology and intricacies of New Moon’s opposing forces. In other words, with such a profound back-story between werewolves and vampires, New Moon will explore more while connecting on a deeper level to Bella. In many ways and aspects surrounding the Quileute Tribe and the legend, New Moon should tap into the book on better levels than that of Twilight. The legend and the expanded significance of Jacob will take fans on a darker journey while evoking more complex emotions than Twilight.
Looking ahead:
With casting almost complete and a new location already in play, New Moon is quickly getting production underway in Vancouver. What really matters is the continuation of the story. But can Edward and Bella do what we have envisioned from the book? The mystery lies in the creation and execution of Stephenie Meyer’s world into two hours of visual complexity. Many fans of the series were left wanting with Twilight. Will New Moon become another blockbuster hit at the box-office? Unlike the unknown of Twilight on the big screen, we’re expecting New Moon to be better in at least 5 different ways - new characters and conflict, Dakota Fanning and how she'll raise the game of the cast, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart digging deeper as actors, the new location, and further exploration of the legend.
Wow....Here I am an older person...and never have I been sucked into something like this. I saw the Twilight Movie and was not impressed at all. The acting left something to be desired...but I went ahead and bought the books to see what all the hoop-la was about. Well...Stephenie Meyer...you did good! The books were well written and kept me interested. So they arn't just for the young....they are for the young at heart and Stephenine finally gave us a happily-ever-after with a lot of drama to get us there. I only hope that Chris and all his crew give us a much better Movie with New Moon. Yes...I too, am now looking forward to seeing the Movie just to see if they can pull off a better job than Twilight.

Loved the movie-must have watched it about 10 times now & everytime I see something different.Liked the way Stephanie Meyer casted herself into the scene in the diner-pretty tricky !!!!! - didn't notice it the 1st time I watched it. I thought the book & the movie followed along nicely. Will always be a die hard fan of this series-also enjoyed the TV series "True Blood"- I must have a thing for vampires..............

Subject: my opinion
I watched Twilight before I read the books, I'm currently working on Breaking Dawn. The books are always better becasue there is and can be so much more detail, so considering this I think they did a good job on the movie. I can't wait for New Moon. I agree they need to stick with the way the book plays out, as much as I love Edward and Bella the departure is needed. I just hope they do plan on making the Eclipse and Breaking Dawn into movies and following the books as much as they can, otherwise why even bother, you can't just stop at New Moon or even Eclipse. I know that there have been some bad reveiws about Breaking Dawn, how it could have been better and it's just a happy ending, what's wrong with a happy ending? I would not even start reading Breaking Dawn until I new it would be Edward and Bella till the end and I probably would not watch the movies if it ened badly, we have enough saddness in our lives why not a happy ending? I have to say I have never been addicted to books or a movie like this, I only wish Breaking Dawn was not the last. The author sure can tell a story.
omg i cant wait till new moon comes out cause im a really big fan and the next day is my birthday so im goin to have a blast ♥ u edward......

I think Dakota will be great for the part of Jane in New Moon. She is so sweet and cute like Jane. The only thing is that Dakota has blond hair and Jane is supposed to have a brownish hair so Dakota will haft to wear a wig well I hope she gets the part.
Good Luck Dakota

I'm in love with TAYLOR LAUTNER and I'm happy that Bella's not suppose to fall for him. I think the movie was really good, but they skipped a lot of pages in the book, which I don't think they should. I can't wait till New Moon comes out. Me and lots of my friends might go to the movies and watch it. I bet that the theater will be full if we go. Also my sister is in LOVE with Robert Pattinson aka EDWARD CULLEN. My mom even likes the books!! She read them before me and loved them. My friends read the books before me and told me EVERYTHING that happened, espically at the end. Me and my friend Bry raced each other trying to see who could get done first with Breaking Dawn. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL ALL THE MOVIES ARE OUT!!!!!!

Subject: NEW MOON & ECLIPSE
heres the thing people:
first of all “New moon” is starting to shoot this March and is directed by Chris Weitz while they shoot new moon, the script writer is already writing “ECLIPSE” so there is time, is not like they are going to wait until NEW MOON comes out. another thing
they are doing this because ECLIPSE is directed by someone else, so right after the characters are done with New moon they’ll start shooting ECLIPSE RIGHT AWAY…. oh and they cant wait if yall want the same people to play their characters since the vampires can’t grow old have to stay the same. so stop giving a hard time… the new director is going to work hard to bring us the best movie. p.s: YOU ALL KNOW THAT AT THE END THE RELEASE DATES CHANGES MOST OF THE TIME, FOR CERTAIN MINORITY PROBLEMS OR SO, SO IT MIGHT NOT BE THE FINAL OFFICIAL DATE ,UNTIL WE GET CLOSER TO THE DATE
