Doritos Should Get "Angry" with Top 5 Clip Gurus
by Larson Hill

Budding filmmakers looking for a break and something flavorful to put on your resume, listen up. This one's for you. With video taking over the web like a viral tidal wave, it's not hard to stumble into something that gives you more than you bargained for. Although YouTube works just fine on most days, this week it was Doritos. And since some of us here at TheDeadbolt have made the rounds in Hollywood trying to get noticed, it's great to see up and coming talent getting a break from the big guys.

Since the web has gone full-throttle viral in the age of "user video," with millions able to upload their own videos to various networks, aspiring filmmakers have a larger pool to promote their work and get noticed. Recently the ad gurus at chip giant Doritos launched a massive marketing campaign that allowed video fanatics and aspiring filmmakers to upload their own 30 second videos to compete for the top prize of having their homemade clip run as a full-blown Doritos commercial on nationwide TV. At the end of the competition, with the last clip (and chip) standing, Doritos will crown their new Doritos Guru.

For any budding filmmaker trying to make it in the business, becoming a Doritos Guru can be the difference between sitting at a coffee shop all day long creating videos on a laptop or taking the first step toward a career as a director. For others it's all fun and games. Either way it's a win - win for anyone who makes the Doritos Guru Top 5 since the winner walks away with a $25,000 prize and professional PR help to take their video advertising game to the next level.

When we stumbled into the Doritos Guru video competition to check out the five semi-finalists, one thing that hit us like a ton of digital bricks is the quality of competition. Well, certainly one that's definitely making us wonder what "angry" tastes like.

Since feature length films are now being created completely on laptops given the advances in digital video technology, a 30-second clip for a commercial may be a cakewalk for anyone with true behind-the-lens talent.

So what's this all about? Two simple words ... Angry Ranch.

Easily the frontrunner for the top Doritos prize, with a clip that feels like it's already on the airwaves, is budding filmmaker Erik Boychuk and his chip clip team of sketch comedy writer Simon Yang, Lloyd Choi (director of photography), Devan Vancise (actor), and Fiona Naoko Walsh (actor) who collectively created the clip "Angry Ranch," about a pissed off dude with a chip on his shoulder that could use some serious help in the way of Doritos flavor. As far as breaking into the film game via a 30-second ad for a chip giant, "Angry Ranch" hits all of the high notes of what an ad should be, created by young filmmakers who obviously know the brand.

So how does an aspiring director come up with such an awesome idea for a chip giant like Doritos? Erick Boychuk, both director and “Angry Ranch” guy in the clip, told The Deadbolt, "Well, we had to name the taste right. So the idea was that we took a bite and it tasted like Ranch but it had a real kick of heat to it. So I figured, if this was a Ranch it would definitely be an "Angry Ranch."

Clever comedy aside, which is impressively effective for such a spot-on clip in terms of the Doritos brand, creating a 30-second ad is a lot different than making a short film to showcase your work. So how was the process different for the Top 5 Doritos Guru hopeful? Boychuk explained, "The way I see it, ads are just like mini movies. Well, at least a lot of the ads you see on TV nowadays. So I just figured that if we had to make a movie about Doritos, it would probably go like this."

Mike has a problem. He's always pissed. Maybe the new Doritos flavor can help? Get your chip thing happening and head this way to vote for "Angry Ranch".
