Prison Break Spin-off Not Planned, but 'Twitching'
by Troy Rogers
Will
we ever see Prison Break live on in some form
or another? How about the much talked about Prison
Break spin-off that was up in the air several
months ago? Maybe, anything is possible, as we
found out today on a conference call with executive
producer Matt Olmstead, but don't get your hopes
up.
Now in its fourth season, Fox's Prison Break returns to the airwaves on April 17 to kick-start the final episodes to wind down the series. After escaping Fox River Penitentiary in the first season of Prison Break, character brothers Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) went on the run to uncover the secrets behind the mysterious international agency known as "The Company" but later found themselves working with old enemies while imprisoned in Panama before fleeing to Los Angeles in season four. At the start of Prison Break, however, the creative gurus behind the show let fans know ahead of time that Prison Break wasn't designed to run several seasons.
Although Prison Break had a definite series end, over the past year or two there's been word of a possible Prison Break spin-off, which was rumored to possibly be set in a women's prison. As far as returning to the roots that made the series such a great weekly ride, with a fresh angle, a spin-off didn't sound too bad.
With Prison Break soon wrapping up the series storyline, is there still hope for a Prison Break spin-off or is it completely dead?
As Matt Olmstead revealed to our own Troy Rogers in the conference call, "There's no plan for a Prison Break spin-off. We did a script for what would be establishing a character in season three," Olmstead admitted, "a female character, and then spinning her off into, essentially, a female prison show." So what happened on the way to a second Fox cell-block in the Prison Break Universe?
According
to longtime executive producer, Matt Olmstead,
the spin-off got captured by the warden of life
dynamics. "And there were a couple hurdles involved.
We couldn't get the actress, the strike happened,
and when we came back the show was in its last
season. You know, The Sarah Conner Chronicles
wasn't doing that great and there's a host of
reasons why that idea, that project, cooled.
Who's to say if it could get a spark again?
I'm not counting on it. You know, my days aren't
based around it, but for me the show is done."
And while Olmstead considers Prison Break over
as a series, he also revealed that there's nothing
in the "planning stage" either.
Buy when asked if the Prison Break is "officially" dead, Matt Olmstead, didn't confirm the kill, although it doesn't seem likely. "It's on the ground, leg is twitching, but there is still a heartbeat perhaps."
