Recapping 90210 and the “Okaeri, Donna” Return of Tori Spelling
by Alison Cox

It was a big night on Tuesday for first generation 90210 fans when Donna Martin came back to town for the first of her two episode stint. As we catch up to Donna, still married to David Silver, she’s now a fashion designer in Japan.

Tori Spelling’s return comes during a tumultuous time in her real life, as she and mom Candy Spelling are battling out their irreconcilable differences through the tabloids, media and their own just released tell all books. To say the least, it’s certainly not your typical family feud but it does make for a great plot in a future episode of 90210. Who knows? Maybe the reunion between mom and daughter will be the ingredients for the next reality show, Spelling vs Spelling, or Spelling Spilling Spelling? The Biggest Spelling? How about Survivor: Candy Tori?

As we found out, it’s Spring Break and the group splits up for various adventures – Habitat for Humanity gets a plug from the zip-coders, though I have to wonder if the girls actually got any dirt under their manicured nails. “Let’s do some good here. Let’s build a house,” from the mouth of teacher, Mr. Matthews, the instigator of the trip while Dixon and Annie take off on a road trip to Arizona (to grandma’s in Palm Springs as far as their parents know.)

Pre-emption: I had to blink my eyes a couple of times to rid the image of the weird product placement for Dr. Pepper that stood out like a sore thumb. Jeepers, are people still peppers these days? Some kind of catch, I’m sure. Now back to the show…

Dixon, it turns out, has an alternative motive for the road trip – a hunt for his birth mom. Seems there is some unresolved issues on Dixon’s part, who’s feeling some guilt about his choosing adoption over going back into the custody of his mentally ill mother years back. Now older and wiser, especially with Silver’s bipolar diagnosis, he feels compelled to apologize to his birth mother.

Back in Beverly Hills, Silver is getting increasingly irritated by Kelly’s overdose of therapy monitoring, until she’s saved by the bell, literally. Surprise! Enter Donna Martin! Old pals reminisce at the familiar zip code. Since it’s old pals, old chemistry week, all we need now is for Dylan to cruise up on his motorcycle. Sigh! Most likely wishful thinking on my part, especially since Luke Perry told us earlier in the year when we asked him if he’d be returning to 90210 for a cameo, "That would be a no."

The blonde sisters-in-law are sporting much larger sunglasses these days, cruising around in a convertible in the California sunshine and later winding up at a chic Japanese eatery. Diablo Cody, winner of the Best Screenplay Oscar for Juno, pops by as herself. Interrupting their meal, Cody asks about Donna’s dress, no less. Of course Donna designed it and ends up scoring the design gig for Diablo’s next red carpet event.

In other 90210 happenings, Naomi gets ex Ethan to find out if her new boy of interest is into her. Even without Ethan’s help, it doesn’t take long for sparks to fly between the questionable “oxy-morons” in a passionate encounter under a tree. Habitat for…?

The 90210 return of Tori Spelling comes to a close with Donna confessing that things aren’t as they seem with David and spills to Kelly about their separation. Sisters-in-law may not be sisters in law much longer. Hmmm … What will happen on Tori’s 90210 sequel episode? Stay tuned. The next one we’ll be digging deep in Tori’s return to see how she did.
