Twilight Director Wrap: Eclipse, David Slade, News and Rumors
by Troy Rogers

Now that Twilight Saga fans can look beyond New Moon to the third Twilight film, Eclipse, and its recently announced director, David Slade, of 30 Days of Night, the Eclipse directing confirmation makes you wonder why so much text was wasted on rumors of Paul Weitz, brother of New Moon director Chris Weitz, Drew Barrymore, and The Orphanage helmer, Juan Antonio Bayona. When you look back at the Twilight rumors surrounding who would be hired to direct Eclipse after New Moon, the recent signing of David Slade is proof that just because something's posted on the internet doesn't mean it's true no matter who you hear it from and what type of Twilight spin comes with it.

Last week, according to Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment signed David Slade to helm Eclipse, the third book in the Twilight franchise. For Twilight fans who may be wondering how the Twilight Saga's Eclipse will look given the bloody style of David Slade, as reported Slade won’t be bringing the same level of gore to Eclipse that we saw in 30 Days. As far as a projected timeline for the third Twilight movie, it was also reported that Eclipse is expected to be released on June 30, 2010.

To date, aside from the cast, the one constant factor in the Twilight world has been Melissa Rosenberg, who wrote the scripts for both Twilight and New Moon, and will also be penning the script for Eclipse. So how does the Twilight Saga brainchild feel about the Eclipse director? Stephenie Meyer had this to say about the most recent Twilight helmer to join the fray: “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing 'Eclipse,' He's a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise.”

So what was all of the earlier Twilight hype surrounding possible Eclipse directors worth in terms of news? Well, Eclipse won’t be directed by Drew Barrymore, Juan Antonio Bayona, Paul Weitz, or even Madonna. Instead, Twilight and New Moon stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be working with David Slade, whose name was nowhere near the wild rumor list only weeks ago.

Since the mainstream media has been competing fiercely for Twilight time against amateur, not even part-time bloggers for morsels related to Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, it's hard to take any "news" seriously anymore on the internet. I mean just last week a fake New Moon lawsuit story appeared online and was taken by some as fact. Like I said, just because something's posted on the internet doesn't mean it's true no matter who you hear it from and what type of Twilight spin comes with it.

In this Twilight day and age you need to have your own filter as to what's worthy of reporting, especially in regard to Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse or stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Nikki Reed. Contrary to what some may say, not everything related to Twilight is news. A newsworthy insider scoop about Twilight possibilities regarding Eclipse is great, but it shouldn't have been perceived as fact despite its close insider connections, as many picked up on. We knew better, still fell for it and got burned since the frenzy over the Twilight Saga is at a fever pitch. In this wide open Twilight news age, everyone is going to get burned at some point.

Between five and ten years ago, rumors were handled much differently prior to the blogging explosion. It was an unspoken rule that without confirmation, you'd be tarred and feathered and mocked over a lack of credibility by reporting rumor as fact ... or near close to fact, as near certainty. Confirmation, or near confirmation was key. Today there's an "okay, let's move on" mentality since there are simply too many outlets, too many people writing the same stories, and too many writers with wide gaps in experience all playing in the same pool.

I remember during the 2008 Election when a Florida man was asked by a reporter what he thought of the ongoing barrage of news about John McCain and Barack Obama and how it would influence his vote, to which he answered that there's so much now from so many angles that you don't know what to believe. There's a similar thread in all of the many Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse rumors.

How will this affect online news reporting in the future? When we recently asked veteran news man, Tom Brokaw, about how he views the press as a character in America’s future, the former NBC Nightly News anchor told our Deadbolt head, Reg Seeton, “I’m more worried about the future of American press, period, in its print and even in some of its electronic forms.” Given the hundreds of questionable Twilight stories hitting the web, Brokaw certainly has just cause.

Now that David Slade is in the can to direct Eclipse, my next question is: "Who will be directing Breaking Dawn?" How about Taylor Lautner since the fourth book in the Twilight Saga is partially told from the point of view of Jacob Black? Why not Abe Vigoda or the Sham Wow guy? See ... Just remember you heard it here first.

I really hope Eclipse is not turned into a movie where violence is the key theme. It's still a love story, don't remove the major theme.. Although, the fight between Edward and Victoria sounds very cool. Remember, the book didn't go into a lot of detail about what happened with all the rest of the newborns. One of my favorite books "Riverworld" was turned into a movie. The movie was all about violence and I absolutely hated it. It was a real departure from the book(s). We get enough violence in the real world.

I personally have no problem with the directors, though I wish Catherine could've had more funding to Twilight but other than that the movie's chains are probably still going to be phenomenal, I just hope they do not change the actors, I love the actors and will hate the people who change them!!

They all do amazing jobs on their part, and as for directing Breaking Dawn, I agree, maybe Taylor should do it if he feels he is that in touch with Jacob. If he is.

<3 Twilight (:

Subject: Rumors

I think that it is completely irresponsible journalism that is causing the worst part of the whole Twilight saga. The rumors about the actors private moments are just ridiculous. Who is sleeping with who...... who is fighting with who.... They need to pay more attention to the movie story and books instead of the actors and their private lives! Leave them alone.

I didn't quite like when it was on Jacobs point of view. I thought it would be better if it was Edwards point of view even though Stephanie Meyer is doing Midnight Sun has his point of view. I just hope they manage to get the last book in as a movie because since it's so long. Maybe they will do what the director of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows is doing, splitting the movie into two bits. (Hopefully) I love the Twilight Saga. Ive read all the books about three or four times. Kthankzbi !

I think that its wonderful that David Slade will be directing Eclipse. But, I am a little disappointed that he was quoted as saying that the vampires will not be as gory as the ones on 30 Days of Night...I hope that they will be a little, at least enough for PG13 rating. That movie (30 Days of Night) was terrifying and exactly what I picture the newborn vampires in Eclipse to be like--feral, thirsty, savage and view humans only as food.

By the way, will there be a sequel to 30 Days of Night? Lots of people I know hope so

I think the directors chosen are great. I just wish they keep the same actors I hate movies that change the main actors(Robert & Kristen) those are the main actors. I can't wait I'm very excited to see the two upcoming movies. Hope to hear soon when Breaking Dawn will be released.

My opinion is as long as the series keeps the same actors and actresses, it will be great. I cant wait to see the upcoming movie in November 09.

I thought that only a portion of Breaking Dawn is from Jacob's point of View. The remainder goes back to Bella. Breaking dawn needs to focus on the wedding and transformation of Bella and the pending Volturri run in at the end.
