Season 4 'Psych' Clues with James Roday and Dule Hill
By Troy Rogers

After three successful seasons on the mysterious USA Network cases of Psych, actors James Roday and Dule Hill return for Psych Season 4 on August 7, in a comedy crime solving quad run that sees guest star Rachel Leigh Cook step back into the life of Shawn Spencer as Cary Elwes, James Brolin, David Naughton, and Sendhil Ramamurthy of Heroes also make guest appearances.

The fourth season of Psych will feature even more '80s related mysterious hilarity in storylines that see Roday and Hill get caught up in a corporate western takeover, exorcise demons, and kick off the new season of Psych with "Extradition: British Columbia," where Shawn and Gus go deep into the world of art thievery on the ski hills outside Vancouver.

Ahead of the fourth season USA Network premiere of Psych on August 7 at 10pm, we followed the Psych clues to a recent conference call to hear what James Roday and Dule Hill have in store for fans this upcoming season fresh on the heels of Comic Con.

James Roday on keeping the momentum of Psych going into the fourth season:

"Well, for me anyway, I kind of felt like season three was sort of a tale of two seasons, really. I kind of felt like we teed it up down the stretch, on the back end there especially, and that makes it a little easier to keep up the momentum, because I kind of felt like we were riding high going into the hiatus with the last batch of episodes we shot and everybody was feeling confident and good and didn’t want to stop. And I think because of that, it yielded some pretty strong stuff at the beginning of season four. So I do think we’ve kept up our momentum and I think the end of season three had a lot to do with that."

Dule Hill on his comedic timing:

"I think it comes naturally to me. I mean, usually I’m someone who likes to have fun and make jokes a lot at home, so I guess it’s just something that comes easy. Also, working with someone like Roday and the rest of the cast, I can improve on it day in and day out and, personally, I learn more. My timing has gotten better this season more than it is now and it has a lot to do with working with Roday and realizing all of this fun stuff to do."

James Roday on writing episodes and how he comes up with the concepts for them:

"I usually just pick a genre that I feel like doing and go off and come up with something that I can pay homage to. It’s the great thing about our show. We sort of created a landscape for Psych where we’re kind of allowed to go off and give a shout-out to movies that we love, genres that we love, and that’s what I’m happy to look back at my episodes, especially this season. It’s pretty much what I do. I decide that I want to go do a slasher, I decide that I want to go do a werewolf episode, and Psych is one of those very unique shows on TV where somehow all of those things can work."

Dule Hill on whether it’s time for Gus to turn the tables on Shawn and pull a fast one on him:

"I tried to pull one off on Shawn last year and I guess he got him a little bit. But obviously he wasn’t quick enough to get him completely. I don’t know. Maybe he’ll try something again this season, I don’t know. That’s a good question, whether he does or not. He’ll make a valiant effort. As we do the show, we’ll figure it out."

James Roday on the importance of the mystery elements of Psych:

"I think there are a couple of different camps on that one. I think we would probably fall into the camp of, no, never sacrifice a good joke to make the mystery better. And then there are people who sort of, at the network - One of our executive producers in particular, he would probably disagree and say that you can always spare comedy on the show and that we need to have good cases, and you know that track. But, I don’t know. We sort of got an eye opening experience at Comic Con and so we had to come face to face with some of our fans, and I feel like the majority of them are tuning in to watch us act like fools, not solve a mystery."

James Roday on this year’s Comic Con:

"It was definitely overwhelming and it was great to be actually face to face with our fans. I mean, we shoot up in Vancouver and it kind of puts us in a bubble sometimes. To be able to come down and sort of hang with them and mingle with them a little bit and feel the love, we were blown away, we really were."
