The Hills Season 5: Part 1 DVD: Reconciliation and Bitter Beginnings by Nadya Vlassoff
The lies, deception, and back stabbing are all
back in full force on Season 5 of The Hills. After
MTV released the news that this would be the last
season for Lauren "LC" Conrad, viewers were left
to wonder exactly how and who would fill the void
left behind by one of MTV’s most popular reality
television stars.
The 10 episode Season 5 DVD set of The Hills begins with LC’s birthday as Audrina Patridge and Lauren "Lo" Bosworth arrange a surprise birthday party with all of LC’s friends on board a yacht. Everything goes off without a hitch until the arrival of Heidi who crashes the party and brings more drama than anyone would have wanted when her boyfriend, Spencer Pratt, ends up in a bar fight with his sister, Stephanie’s, ex-boyfriend. And the drama doesn’t stop there as viewers get to witness more than a few shocking twists on The Hills.
As LC begins to wind down her screen time, Heidi and Spencer are only too happy to fill the void LC left behind. After the bar fight, Heidi heads off to Colorado to figure out exactly how she feels about Spencer and whether or not her other relationships, including her friendship with LC, can survive with Spencer in the picture. Heidi and Spencer are not the only ones with a precarious relationship as Audrina and Brody have an alleged hook-up in Hawaii on what was supposed to be a boys-only surfing trip. The fallout begins when Brody’s girlfriend Jayde discovers the truth and the claws come out.
Despite all of the personal he-said, she-said happenings, Season 5 is all about redemption and reconnections as LC and her friends and family put past feelings aside. Spencer swallows his pride for Heidi and proposes in order to give her the wedding she has always wanted. Simple right? Not quite as Heidi has only one request from her soon-to-be-husband, Lauren needs to be invited.
Finally,
after all of the therapy and the wistful looks
from Heidi, Spencer breaks again and gives LC
the shock of her life when he calls and apologizes
so that Heidi can have all of the people she
loves at her wedding. After weeks of telling
everyone she would not attend the wedding, LC
too has a change of heart and surprises Heidi
just before the ceremony is to begin.
Tears of joy were expected but the final surprise was definitely not one anyone could have planned for: the return of the Queen B herself, Kristin Cavalliri. With Heidi and Spencer’s wedding in full swing, no one has time to adjust to the news of Kristin’s arrival, especially LC who thought she had left Kristin and her high school baggage back in Laguna Beach.
The first half of The Hills Season 5 leaves plenty of viewers scratching their heads at the cast shake-up. Luckily MTV included a slew of extra features on the DVDs. Among them is the LC`s final After Show where she talks about old memories from seasons 1-5 and her plans for the future. Individual interviews with LC, Audrina, and Heidi delve deeper into each one of the show`s stars and their thoughts on everything from the wedding, to their friendships, and how they think The Hills will continue with the new presence of Kristin. Deleted scenes, a featurette on Heidi and Spencer`s wedding, After Show Remixes, and the Season 5 Photo Shoot round out the special features for The Hills Season 5: Part 1 on DVD.

asking this year is whether the MTV reality
series can survive without its most popular
member. After the departure of Whitney Port,
LC is the next cast member to depart and leaves
behind a legacy as one of reality television’s
most popular characters. Audrina Patridge has
also made it known that season 5 will be her
last season of The Hills as she moves on to
other projects which include an acting career.
Now that the second half of season 5 has premiered,
Kristin has not wasted any time getting back
to her old tricks and the drama is already off
the chart. The Hills airs on Tuesday at 10pm
on MTV.
