Rapping with Eve for 'Glee'
by Troy Rogers

After working with such musical greats as The Roots and Janet Jackson before breaking out as one of the most successful female rappers in the late '90s, Grammy Award winner, Eve, went on to record two more popular albums while also stepping into her own self-titled TV series in 2003.

Aside from a successful music and TV career, Eve also kept busy with a variety of film roles in such movies as XxX, Barbershop, and The Woodsman while also lending her voice to various animated projects and the video game XIII. To say the least, Eve, also the creator of her "Fetish" fashion line, has been one of the most diverse artists out there in terms of working beyond her music.

Now, after appearing in the movie Whip It! as Rosa Sparks, opposite Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore, Eve steps onto the set of Fox's hit comedy, Glee, on Wednesday, November 25, as an instructor of a competing Glee Club.

Ahead of the November 25 episode of Glee, we joined in on a conference call to spend some time with Eve and learn more about her Glee guest role, whether she used any of her previous Glee experience for the part, and how her Glee guest stint compares to other roles Eve has landed on TV.

THE DEADBOLT: Your character is the instructor of a competing glee club. How is your approach different than Will's?

EVE: I think for me especially, I come from a harder place. I'm a teacher of a reform school. And my girls, I'm used to being very strict with them. So I think in that aspect you can see the dynamics between us, and we were sitting across the desk from each other, that I come from a harder place than he does.

THE DEADBOLT: How does this role compare to others you've had on TV?

EVE: Well, this is the first I'm being a teacher [laughs]. That was really fun. It was fun to sit back and be kind of an administrator, like a choir director. That was pretty cool.

THE DEADBOLT: Did you take anything from your choir experience for the role?

EVE: Not really. You know, I didn't get a chance to really conduct anything. But no, not really. We were pretty much well rehearsed [laughs].

THE DEADBOLT: And I'm curious as to what you're doing in Dubai right now?

EVE: I am performing in a few clubs. I have a club date here in Dubai and then a club date in Abu Dhabi.

Other Conference Call Highlights:

Did you have any creative input in the songs they're airing in Wednesday's episode?

EVE: No, not at all. It was already in the script, which I thought was hilarious, because when I read the script I just couldn't believe it, like, "How are they going to pull this off?" But it's amazing and it's hilarious at the same time.

What would you have chosen if you had your way?

EVE: That's a good question. [laughs] Probably "Sweet Dreams", that's like my karaoke go-to. So I probably would've picked that one.

The set seems to be just like high school, there are tons of hormones running wild. How was that attracting with the cast? Did you get that feeling from any of them?

EVE: Honestly, the cast were the sweetest, loveliest people. I had the best time. You could just tell how happy and proud they were to be a part of the show. And it's kind of infectious, because I felt the same way. I just was so happy and honored to be on set. They're the sweetest kids.

Did you bond with any of them?

EVE: No, I didn't. [laughs] They all kind of move together. It's like they're pretty much a little click of their own. But like I said, they were the sweetest kids.

The show is bringing back musical theater in a huge way. Did you ever have an interest in it? Did you ever participate, or anything like that?

EVE: I definitely was involved in choir. I loved that kind of stuff. I am dramatic, so I loved drama and stuff like that. I love that it's on TV and that it's being shown.

Did you have any similar experiences in high school to what you're doing in the episode?

EVE: Not at all. [laughs] I mean, obviously the show is so extraordinary. There are so many hilarious things that go on, it's kind of out there. One thing I do love about the show is that I applaud them for taking on major issues, kind of grown up issues in certain episodes. But no, I really don't recognize anything from my high school.

The show is on the day before Thanksgiving. So what are your Thanksgiving Day plans this year?

EVE: I'm in Dubai as we speak right now. So I'll be in Dubai for Thanksgiving, which will be a little weird. I guess this will be my first Thanksgiving with no turkey.
