Tokio Hotel Teams with Designers Against AIDS
by Nadya Vlassoff

As more musical artists lend their talents and celebrity to worthy, charitable causes to raise awareness for largely overlooked issues, Tokio Hotel recently joined Designers Against Aids in a bid to spread the word about the Fashion Against Aids 2009 campaign, which educates people on the benefits of safe sex. December 1 marked World Aids Day and was also the start of the DAA and Tokio Hotel collaboration where Tokio fans can make a donation to be entered to win one of ten signed Tokio Hotel t-shirts.

Currently riding high with the release of Humanoid, Tokio Hotel has one of the most dedicated fan bases in music. In the United States, devoted Tokio Hotel street teams have helped the German band bridge the international divide into the American market. Although Tokio Hotel has been a hit with Tokio fans overseas, it wasn’t until the 2008 release of "Scream" and "Ready, Set, Go" that Tokio Hotel began to garner buzz in the U.S.

Designers Against Aids has worked with some of the world’s premiere artists along with fashion powerhouse, H&M, which created a line of t-shirts designed by such celebrities as Timbaland, Estelle, Tokio Hotel, Yoko Ono, and Dita Von Teese. DAA was launched in Belgium in 2004 and has since grown to raise awareness for AIDS around the globe via unique marketing promotions featuring celebrities from the sports world, fashion, music, and pop culture.

Tokio Hotel lead guitarist, Tom Kaulitz has been blogging about the involvement of Tokio Hotel in the FAA campaign and how he and Bill Kaulitz, Gustav Schäfer, Georg Listing are proud to promote the message of safe sex. For many teens and young adults, safe sex education hasn’t been accessible and the involvement of organizations like DAA and bands like Tokio Hotel have helped to inform in relatable, innovative ways. With an ever-growing fan base, Tokio Hotel has used their celebrity to benefit Tokio fans in a reciprocal manner.

DAA and Tokio Hotel launched their special collaboration on Tuesday, December 1, which features an exclusive Tokio Hotel button set at the official Designers Against AIDS website. Along with the DAA and Tokio Hotel campaign, the German rockers will continue to promote Humanoid only now with a second underlying message of safe sex.

I have no use for buttons, but I want to buy them anyway!

I wish I could go to one of TH's European tour dates, but I don't even have a passport, so I won't be entering the contest.
