The Wolfman Howl Recorded by Gene Simmons and David Lee Roth
by Reg Seeton

With the Universal Pictures revamp of The Wolfman less than a month away, fans of The Wolfman are getting ready to howl on February 12 when Benicio Del Toro takes the lead in the Joe Johnston directed Wolfman remake. Although we know that special effects are updating the visual style of The Wolfman and Del Toro's Wolfman transformation, you may be surprised to learn where The Wolfman sound effects came from.

In an interview with Boxoffice ,The Wolfman director, Joe Johnston, revealed that instead of getting Wolfman actor Benicio Del Toro to provide his own lycanthrope sound effects in the Universal pic, Johnston looked to Kiss demon Gene Simmons and Van Halen front man David Lee Roth to provide the vocals for The Wolfman howl.

When asked if the Gene Simmons howl for The Wolfman was true, Joe Johnston admitted that it was but they only used one of Simmons' howls in The Wolfman. "We tried Gene Simmons and one of Gene Simmons' howls is in the movie. I don't think Gene Simmons would recognize it, but it's in there. We had David Lee Roth come in and do a few howls. We had opera singers come in and howl, we had animal impersonators. Gene Simmons and David Lee Roth were pretty near the end of the process."

We can just imagine what The Wolfman recording sessions must have looked like, as Joe Johnston goes on to describe how Gene Simmons and David Lee Roth were funny while in the recording studio for The Wolfman.
