Richard Hatch, the original Survivor to "Outwit, Outplay, Outlast" the competition will have to do it again. This time, it will be in a federal prison in Oklahoma.
Richard Hatch won the first installment of the massively
popular CBS show, Survivor. His prize for winning
was $1 million, but, after "forgetting" to pay taxes
on his earnings, he was sentenced to 51 months in prison.
After having been serving his time at the Plymouth County
Correctional Facility in Massachusetts, he has been
moved to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City.
As MSNBC
reports, "It wasn't immediately clear why Hatch
was moved or whether he will serve out his prison sentence
at the facility, which is a hub for prisoners transferring
through the federal system."
The transfer to the federal prison in Oklahoma came
at the dismay of Hatch's lawyer, Michael Minns. Minns
said that Hatch would prefer to serve out the rest of
his sentence near to his family in Rhode Island or in
Florida. ABC
News quoted Minns as saying "He
should be in a camp. The camps are the most comfortable
of the uncomfortable. They are still jails, but they
get to see the sky and be outside. It's bad for Richard,
who is an outdoor person."
Richard Hatch was originally under investigation from
the United States Attorney's Office in Providence, Rhode
Island, after the reported that Hatch did not report
the $1 million winning from Survivor as income.
As well as the grand prize, Hatch failed to report the
additional $10,000 paid by CBS for his appearance on
the final show. Later that year, it was discovered Hatch
failed to report $321,000 he earned for appearances
on a Boston radio station.
After refusing to accept a plea bargain, Hatch was
indicted on September 8, 2005. He was found guilty on
January 25, 2006, but a Providence, Rhode Island jury,
and was sentenced 51 months in prison, plus three years
of supervised release.
