Considering that 80’s pop star, Boy George missed court appointed community service and failed to pay a fine, he’s lucky that he’s not in jail. In turn, he’s been given the dirtiest streets in New York to clean during the height of summer.

This latest turn of events for Boy George all stems from an incident earlier this year when he reported a burglary at his Manhattan apartment and police found drugs and drug paraphernalia. Then to make matters worse, he avoided the initial community service handed down, which didn’t sit very well with the judge. As a result, he’s now been given a week to clean some of New York’s skuzziest streets, starting August 14th. According to E Online , the judge reportedly told the “Karma Chameleon” singer that if he didn’t finish his community service by August 28th, he would definitely go to jail this time.

Forget the crazy eye make-up and outrageous clothes. This time, Boy George will be sporting gloves, a shovel, a broom and plastic bags when he reports to the city’s sanitation department to start his clean up of The Big Apple. In an interview with The New York Daily News sanitation department spokesman, Vito Turso, said that Boy George, whose real name is George O’Dowd, will be assigned to District 3, which includes Little Italy and Chinatown. What does this mean? According to Turso, “A lot of tourist traffic means a lot of street litter,” adding, “This is the epitome of community service. It's not like he's going to be working in an air-conditioned office.”

Boy George became a pop icon back in the 1980s with the band Culture Club, which produced such memorable hits as “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, “Karma Chameleon”, “It's a Miracle”, “Church of the Poisoned Mind”, and “Time”. Boy George also went on the have later success as a club DJ in Europe, but it was his earlier struggles with drugs that led to the demise of the Culture Club. In recent years, Boy George reunited with his Culture Club bandmates for a series of tours throughout the U.S. and Europe.
