Irish Rock band U2 topped a recent poll of 13,000 participants conducted by
VH1 to find Britain's favorite pop music lyric. U2
topped the survey with a line from the song One, off
of the band's 1991 album Achtung Baby, "One life, with
each other, sisters, brothers."
In second place behind U2, fronted by booming political minded vocalist Bono,
was a song by The Smiths, How Soon Is Now, and the lyric,
"So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave
on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want
to die." Third place went to Nirvana and the hit song Smells
Like Teen Spirit and the lyric, "I feel stupid and
contagious, here we are now, entertain us."
With the haunting Redemption Song by reggae legend
Bob Marley in fourth spot, and Yellow by Coldplay in
fifth place, according to the Associated
Press, the remainder of the VH1 survey
was as colorful and bold as U2, "The top 10 was a
mix of the affirmative and the acerbic, ranging from
Robbie Williams' uplifting 'Angels' - 'And through it
all she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection,
whether I'm right or wrong' -- to Radiohead's sour 'Creep.'
"
The songs for the VH1 poll were selected by various music industry personalities
who gave participants 100 songs to choose from.
Irish rockers Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. originally
formed U2 back in 1976 under the name Feedback, and
later The Hype. It wasn't until 1979 that the band changed
their name to U2 and released their first single U2-3
on the British charts. In 1980, the band signed to Island
records and released Boy, but U2 shot to even bigger
stardom in 1983 with the release of War, which spawned
the classic U2 anthem Sunday Bloody Sunday. After War,
and a memorable performance at the 1985 music festival,
Live Aid, U2 became legends of their time with subsequent
hit albums, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree,
Rattle & Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, and How to
Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
One and its lyric, "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers," was one
of five hit singles that U2 release from Achtung Baby,
the other well known songs are, Mysterious Ways, The
Fly, Who's Going to Ride Your Wild Horses, and Even
Better Than the Real Thing.
