He's still the best. You can talk about how great David Letterman and Conan O'Brien are (please don't include Jay Leno's name in the debate), but there is one name that still comes to mind when you hear the phrase "late-night talk show host" and he's been off the air for over a decade - Johnny. Mr. Carson will be the king of late night for decades to come, possibly forever. He was that good. It's easy to believe that no one will ever improve on what he did and if you watch the people doing it now on all channels, including people like Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert, they're all doing a riff on what Carson created. Don't believe us? Not familiar with the man who hosted The Tonight Show for the run of seven different American presidents from John F. Kennedy to George H.W. Bush? Then there's a great new collection for you this holiday season. Courtesy of R2 Entertainment, Heeere's Johnny is the definitive DVD collection about the master including several previously available box sets of highlights of the king and a never-before-available-at-retail six-disc set called Timeless Moments. Presented in a one-of-a-kind package that looks like the legendary curtain that greeted millions every night, Heeere's Johnny is so affordably priced (less than $100) for what you get that it should go to the top of your list for Carson fans this holiday season.
The box set includes so many of Carson's greatest moments on The Tonight Show in one unique anthology. The set is divided into four box sets, three of which were previously available as stand alone sets. The never-before-released Timeless Moments is the highlight as it includes six discs that were only available to Carson Club Members. It won't be sold separately, so if you're not a Club Member, you need to pick up this set to get it. You'll catch clips with stars as diverse as Burt Reynolds, Roseanne, Michael Landon, Don Rickles, and Ellen DeGeneres. It also includes some animal hijinks with Joan Embery and "Return to Studio One: The Lost Episode" that features Dean Martin and Bob Hope.
After you've worked through all six discs of the appropriately titled Timeless Moments, you can move on to The Ultimate Johnny Carson Collection (three discs), Stand-Up Comedians, and Carson Country. The first is simply another collection of favorite comedy segments and unforgettable guests, a lot like Timeless Moments, and features the "The Final Show", which won an Emmy and featured that memorable performance from Bette Midler. The set also includes a visit by Carson to his hometown in Nebraska, all new behind-the-scenes footage in "Backstage Studio One," "The Johnny Carson Story" and "Danger Johnny," a great collection of '60s on-location footage of Carson participating in sporting events. Stand-Up Comedians focuses on some of the legends who graced The Tonight Show stage including many people recognizable by one name - Carlin, Seinfeld, Dangerfield, Shandling, and more. Carson Country is a collection of country music legends from the show including Johnny Cash, The Judds, Dwight Yoakam and more.
Heeere's Johnny runs over 1,000 minutes and can be bought for less than $100. For even the most casual fan of the king of late-night, it's a no-brainer for your holiday DVD list this season. He may never be replaced on the dial, but you can revisit his best work for hours on DVD.
