Do you think Warner Brothers knows the irony of releasing License to Wed the night before Halloween? Undeniably scarier than most of the horror movies released this year, the awful comedy might make the perfect fit between the latest Saw DVD and the latest Eli Roth flick when you're scheduling your Halloween movie marathon. There are moments in License to Wed that are just as torturous as anything Rob Zombie can come up with in his controversial career. You may think critics have exaggerated the truly offensive comedy in License to Wed, but here's the thing that drove most of us crazy - there are truly talented people involved in making this film. Mandy Moore is charming and can be great (see Saved! if you don't believe me). John Krasinski is charming enough on The Office that it's easy to believe that he could be a movie star if given the right project. Finally, the creator of the American Office, Ken Kwapis directed and, supposedly, had major help from the writers of that great NBC show. And yet they all get sucked in by the utter failure of the film. As with many a failed marriage, the people involved may be great, but they never should have gotten together.

License to Wed is the never-realistic story of a young couple who are forced to visit Reverend Frank (Robin Williams), a preacher with a program that tries to expose couples to the supposed problems of marriage before they actually tie the knot. Instead of learning about the actual pitfalls of the early days of wedlock, these poor people are subjected to creepy robot babies that cry and puke, a demand of abstinence, and even being bugged by the good reverend. None of it comes across as remotely believable. Anyone with an ounce of self-respect would tell Reverend Frank where to stick his marriage manual, but this poor couple goes through the motions, complete with predictable break-up and last-minute reconciliation. (Sorry that didn't come with a spoiler warning, but if you actually think a movie like License to Wed is going to end with our young heroes NOT getting married then you need to see more movies.)

We hate to beat a dead horse, but the failure of License to Wed, not just one of the worst comedies of the year but one of the worst of the decade, just illustrates how far Robin Williams has tumbled. It makes you wonder if he signed a deal with the devil to win his Oscar a decade ago and the last few movies have been his repayment. Why on Earth would someone who has displayed the talent that Williams once did and even has recently in dramatic turns like Insomnia and One Hour Photo take roles like this one, RV, and Man of the Year? It's baffling. He's too talented for this and should sit down and have a long talk with his agent. Even Williams looks like he can't believe he's making License to Wed.

Despite a critical lashing, License to Wed actually made a decent amount in theaters, passing $40 million - not bad for a cheap romantic comedy that was smashed by most who saw it. So why does Warner Brothers give it such a shoddy treatment on DVD? The film will certainly be picked up by hardcore Williams or Office fans and will be a draw this holiday season for present buyers with romantic comedy fans in their family but not only will they be disappointed by the flick but the DVD itself. There's nothing wrong with the video and audio, but the only extras included are some deleted scenes with commentary and an annoying bit with the "Choir Boy" character from the film answering radio phone calls. It makes as little sense as you'd think and is half as funny. If Kwapis showed up for a deleted scenes commentary why couldn't he do an actual film commentary? Maybe he didn't want to watch the movie again. Why should you?
