As a fan of the movie might say, another DVD version of The Princess Bride is nearly "inconceivable." The film has been released half a dozen times on DVD already and they better have pulled something amazing from the MGM vaults like an alternate ending or an early version of the film where someone else played Buttercup for this to be worth a fan's dime. Of course, they haven't. In fact, MGM thinks a "Collector's Edition" should have fewer special features than the editions that were released just last summer (which are still the ones to get if you're a fan of the film). That version of this classic included everything from home movies of Cary Elwes to audio commentaries. This one includes new featurettes and a new game but not the old bonuses from the last edition. Ugh. So, a collector needs to have both editions on his shelf. They should have called it the "Sucker's Edition."

Um, the cover's pretty cool. Yes, we're bitter, but in all seriousness there is one excellent special feature on the Collector's Edition of The Princess Bride - "Princess Bride: The Untold Tales". Even though it runs a pathetic nine minutes, the featurette includes interviews with several of the major players including Mandy Patinkin, Fred Savage, and Robin Wright Penn. Hearing Patinkin talk about weeping the first time he saw the film and watching this great actor come to tears again thinking about that experience is priceless and shows you how important Bride is, even to the people who made it.
The game. DVD games are silly to begin with but this is ridiculous. Hearing people do Peter Falk and Andre the Giant impressions while you try to figure out what rhymes with felt (hint - you wear it around your waist) is insulting. I can't tell you what happens if you finish the game. I have more self-respect than to figure that out.
I'm a huge Princess Bride fan. I'm not about to dress up like a character on Halloween or use a quote from the film in my signature but it definitely influenced the way I look at cinema. Having said that, the 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition of the film is one of the cheapest cash grabs I've ever seen (and I review hundreds of DVDs a year). If they had taken everything that had been included on DVD before and added to it, the double dip might be forgivable, but now you have to have more than one edition of your favorite film to be a true collector and that's, for lack of a better word, inconceivable.
