Although there have been a select few movies that can pull off a cool blend of comedy and horror, namely Evil Dead and Shaun of the Dead, David Arquette’s hippy/stoner, horror comedy The Tripper tries but fails to emulate the better films of the sub-genre. It’s a simple tale of a group of modern day hippies, who set out on a road trip to a concert in the woods. Unbeknown to them, there’s a hippie-hating murderer dressed as former Prez. Ronald Regan, armed with an axe.
There is a lot of extras, but the best piece by far is the "Behind the Spleens" featurette, which provides an awesome look at the production with input from the entire cast. Fans will also be mildly amused to see Jason Mewes playing someone other than Jay, even if he did get hacked to bits.
Although the commentary includes David Arquette, Richmond Arquette, Paul Reubens and Thomas Jane, and is informative and funny, David has an annoying habit of interrupting everyone and monopolizing the entire track. For that alone, it's just an okay commentary, save for the fact that we really wanted to hear more from Paul Reubens and Thomas Jane, who played the two best characters in the movie.
If you’re looking for gut-busting hilarity to go along with your blood and guts, The Tripper isn’t your movie. On the other hand, if you’re a fan of David Arquette, Jason Mewes, Paul Reubens, Thomas Jane and copious amounts of weed, mixed with the slaughter of many a hippie, then by all means check it out.
