We've all had those kinds of jobs. You know, odds stacked against you, rejection after rejection. Betty Suarez [America Ferrera] couldn't get her foot in the door to the fashion world. She didn't fit the stereotypical good looks, she didn't have the same self-confidence, and it was going to take a miracle. Lucky for Betty, Daniel Meade [Eric Mabius] is told, not asked, to hire Betty by his father, Bradford [Alan Dale]. Now, Betty has an in at "Mode" Magazine. However, she'll soon learn that no matter how hard it was, landing a job in the fashion industry was only the first step in actually being accepted into the world of glamor.

Fans who couldn't get enough of Betty last year will just die for the extras on this disc. After you've plowed through all 23 episodes, the deleted scenes are a first stop. More than 20 minutes of bonuses will help you squeeze every last minute of enjoyment from the show, and the box set. That's also probably the best time to take a listen to the four episode commentaries featuring a wide variety of the cast and crew.
If you've invested nearly a full day of your life to the first season of Ugly Betty, you've probably stomached about all you can stomach. Give a pass to the three "Making of" featurettes. All combined, these three segments total just over 20 minutes, and none of the "insights" by the producers, the cast or the crew are worth your time. Unless you need a cheap thrill, the "Ugly Bloopers" extra is four minutes of your life better spent somewhere else.
Ugly Betty didn't just win some fans in its inaugural year: it won millions. There's a reason this show held it's appeal from the US to the UK, from Mexico to India. The writing is solid, the actors sell the story, and we can all relate to Betty in some aspect or another. The season that won over so many fans on TV has turned itself into a fun DVD package, pumped up with a solid complement of extras. Betty proves that if you give the show a chance, you might care more about the fashion industry than you thought.
