Analyzing The Hunger Games Hype

7 years ago by Reg Seeton

With The Twilight Saga about to wind down next year, it appears that The Hunger Games is the most anticipated movie of 2012, according to a new online poll.

If you take a recent poll at at face value, that The Hunger Games truly is the most anticipated movie of 2012 (and not veiled promotional hype), it looks as though the upcoming adaptation of the popular Suzanne Collins novel could be the next Twilight franchise. According to the poll, The Hunger Games tops The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 as the film people want to see most in 2012.

For those unfamiliar with The Hunger Games, the popular first book in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, teens are forced to compete in a nationally televised event in which they must fight with one another until death. Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, a young girl caught between two admirers (Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson), her own survival versus humanity and life against love. The Hunger Games also stars Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Elizabeth Banks.

So, will The Hunger Games, and subsequent films in the series, follow a similar trajectory as The Twilight Saga in terms of popularity? Maybe, but they’re different beasts altogether.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1There’s no doubt that The Twilight Saga will soon leave behind a huge void in the hearts of young moviegoers. I mean, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga films, have been one of the most popular on-screen couples in recent memory. Pattinson and Stewart have been so popular that all four Twilight Saga films to date have grossed over $2 billion.

But if you look back over the course of the past three years, The Twilight Saga certainly didn’t take away from the Harry Potter franchise in terms of popularity in dollar figures. Sure the Twilight Saga films made over $2 billion, but the Harry Potter films blew it away at $7 billion.

To put the The Hunger Games hype into perspective, the better question may be: Is The Hunger Games more popular than Harry Potter? And that’s an easy one to answer … NO! Will The Hunger Games movies be more popular on-screen than The Twilight Saga? It’s doubtful unless The Hunger Games finds momentum with young moviegoers in the same way that Twilight did.

Will The Hunger Games become a cultural phenomenon like The Twilight Saga or Harry Potter series? Again, it’s doubtful. But The Twilight Saga could very well have laid the perfect foundation for The Hunger Games to follow a similar path.

There’s no doubt that The Hunger Games will be popular. I mean, that’s exactly what the poll results indicated, that The Hunger Games is so popular that it’s the most anticipated movie of 2012.

Keep in mind, 2012 has several movies that could bury The Hunger Games in terms of popularity and box office sales: The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, and Prometheus. And despite what the poll results were, you can’t discount The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

What may be more interesting in 2012 is how The Hunger Games will fair as compared to how fans receive Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart of The Twilight Saga.

Who knows where the hype will go at this point. How do you feel about The Hunger Games at this early stage?

What do you think?

It sounds like a great year to go and see a movie!

The Hunger Games is so much BETTER THAN TWLIGHT I AM SO GOING TO SEE IT

Was this written by a Twilight fan? Of course The Hunger Games is not as popular as Harry Potter. Harry Potter has been out for how long now? “Will the Hunger Games be a cultural phenomomenon” It already is! Clearly. Pools show it growing in popularity. People are mad excited for it. Good lord this writer has to be the most biased idiotic person. Not one part of this article made any logical sense. Also, I may not like Twilight, but you say it did not even get close to Harry Potter’s 7 billion. OF COURSE IT DIDN’T! You moron. There have been 8 movies in the Harry Potter franchise compared to the 4 released so far in the Twilight series.  Simple logic is osmething you should look in to studying.

    • Josh18

Wow! Getting that angry and calling people names over something like this?

      And who’s the moron?

        the moron is the author of this article. …i must agree.  default5688 {“method”:”validate”,”params”:[],”id”:1,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″} default5688 {“method”:”validate”,”params”:[],”id”:1,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″}

The Hunger Games will not be the most popular movie of 2012. There’s no way it will be. There are way too many others at play.

To top Twilight in 2008, Hunger Games will have to top  $70 million in its opening weekend. Breaking Dawn Part 1 made $138 million in its opening weekend. Can’t see The Hunger Games beating that at all.

In its second weekend, Beaking Dawn dropped to $41 million… that’s where I see Hunger Games landing.

      why are you so against the hunger games??? its a mush better storyline than sappy twilight. The hunger games, most people believe will change hollywood due to its intresting story. please read teh hunger games books…then say what you want.  default5691 {“method”:”validate”,”params”:[],”id”:1,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″} default5691 {“method”:”validate”,”params”:[],”id”:1,”jsonrpc”:”2.0″}

I never said I was against The Hunger Games. And I never said I was a fan of Twilight either. Where did you get that from? Lol … and you have no idea what I’ve read and what I haven’t.

No, I don’t believe the Hunger Games will be the most popular movie of 2012. That doesn’t mean I’m against the movie or the books … lol. It’s amazing what people interpret.

I’m not seeing the same type of human behavior surrounding The Hunger Games as compared to the Twilight Saga enough for me to buy into it. The Twilight Saga was crazy, whacked, off the chart popular. Think about just how popular The Hunger Games would have to be to do that … that’s just hard to believe.

But who knows, I could be wrong … just like you.

Did you feel the need to analyze the results of the poll because your film did not make it to #1? (LOL!!).  Anyway, the poll results indicate that The Hunger Games is the most anticipated film of 2012…not that it ill make 2 to 7 billion it’s first weekend.  The Hunger Games WILL be VERY popular and will most likely end the weekend with 160 million.   (pssst…guess what?  it’s now #1 on the USA Today Bestseller lists).  It will stand the test of time much better than Twilight (Suzanne Collins is a MUCH better writer than Stephanie Meyer and the film well… better actors, writers, production values, etc.,)  Harry Potter (God Bless it) is over and Twilight (GOOD RIDDANCE!!) mercifully is ending and The Hunger Games franchise is more than capable of filling the void left by those films.

  • Tripe

The Hunger Games will be a better movie because K Stew will not be biting her lip and stuttering throughout.

  • HK

Yea, there are so many big movies out next year that I don’t know. It will do well, but just how well? Who knows.

But as a very likely contender (if not already) as the next big YA phenomena, the franchise as a whole has a bright future, even if the first movie does not become the mega hit of 2012.

  • Noneofyourbuisness

THE HUNGER GAMES…sorry but i think twilight is retarded…plus Jennifer Lawrence is WAY better actress than KStew

  • The Hunger Games is totally gonna rock the big screen.  Ever since I started reading these books, I couldn’t be able to read another book because I’m sooo hooked onto Katniss Everdeen’s story!

  • Kaylinlovesick

i think both sagas are amazingly great all three of them

    • Kaylinlovesick

there’s another novel coming out name sunsetters it’s like a real vampire slayer shit with a crazy love and romance between it’s mean characters and very explicit sex scene and a twist also in the squeals its so amazing and straight forward the why the characters express themseleves straight love, sex and action lots of it.

  • name

people they’re just books.. different storys.. maybe some people prefers love storys .. welll its ok.. but stop comparing … i can´t remember a single chapter in the whole thg books where the ending was “oh my god : my name is katniss everdeen and i love peeta mellark” ¬¬ .. i mean there was love ( i think) at the end .. at the very END (when everything was OVER)
the twilight trilogy is basiclly a love story (a different love story)..
the hunger games is a story about opression and how much war changes
people.. between other things.. (love is not the main point of the story)

and stop comparing movies … ¬¬ almost any of them are out yet… what if they suck?…

  • lucibella

I think it’s almost impossible to compare Twilight and The Hunger Games. There is a woman with two love interests and both of the film series were books first…that’s where the comparisons stop! The Hunger Games has a strong lead female character, not a wimpy nobody who isn’t anything special without a supernatural lover. I think the fan base is entirely different, too. Whereas people who love twilight are pre-teen’s flailing their arms and fainting at the sight of a totally non-threatening/sparkly Rob Pattinson, the fan base of The Hunger Games is much more evolved. It just speaks to an older (or just more mature) and wider audience. I am obviously a Hunger Games fan, but I’ve read both series of books and enjoyed them both. You just have to realize they are too different to compare. Also, I don’t think for a second that Twilight will beat Dark Knight Rises. That is all.

  • Titan7

If Hunger Games was to release now, I’d say it wouldn’t stand a chance at growing into a global phenomenon. But the two big movie series of our decade, Harry Potter and Twilight, are both coming to a close. One’s already gone, the other is on it’s last flick. In the wake of that void, I think Hunger Games could prosper. It brings the same love mixed with action that made Twilight such a hit.
Will Hunger Games dominate box offices, and take in $1.3 million like Harry Potter, no. But I think it stands a chance at being a very successful franchise.
It’s already rising in popularity, and while I’m doubtful, Hunger Games could definitely come in and be the next Harry Potter or Twilight. I mean, did anyone think Twilight would be the giant craze before it was released? No. It came in, and blew up. Hunger Games could easily do just that.

  • kassandra :)))))

im most definitely going with the hunger games!! I mean the excitement action and just ahhhhh!!! Its so good you cant even explain it!! The HUNGER GAMES all the way!!!!!

  • Sheryl Jinjue

Do you know why Potterheads LOATHE Twilight?? Do you know why Twihards SNARE at Harry Potter fans?! BECAUSE YOU (the media) KEEP COMPARING THEM!! Stop it!

    Just STOP.

Everyone could have just gotten along fine but suddenly ONE DAY, SOMEONE decided to say OHMYGAWD TWILIGHT IS GONNA BE THE NEXT HARRY POTTER AND BETTER. The fans dont like it when you replace their love. So they attacked. They took the bad critics and used them to their advantage. So what did the Twilight fans do? They shouted to the world how Harry Potter fans were mean and judgemental and always bashing on them and THEIR love.
So DONT take Hunger Games, such an awesome book, and compare it to something with such minimal similarities.

  • loric

THG attracts a wider range of audience than Twilight. Besides young girls and lonely housewives, most people avoid Twilight like the plague (although, do not underestimate this population, I guess). I’m sorry, as much as I love romance, there is no way I can take Bella and Edward seriously as a couple.

on a side note, I read this in another article and enjoyed it:
“Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived”
“Katniss Everdeen, The Girl on Fire”
“Bella Swan, The Girl Dazzled by Vampires”

  • yoooy

there’s no question that Harry Potter is way better than Twilight. but a matter of Twilight and The Hunger Games? the movie hasn’t been released, maybe it depends if the it will adapt well. but as of now, the book has definitely a better story than Twilight. just my opinion.

The Hunger Games aren’t going to be anywhere near either HP or Twiligt. Compare book sales. For example, Twilight Saga has 116 million sold, The Hunger Games first book barely has only 800,000 copies sold, according to Wiki. The cast sucks, and Mockingjay was the biggest P.O.S. I’ve ever read. Didn’t even finish it.

  • Sjaneelizabeth

Lionsgate did a smart move to launch the trailer of Breaking Dawn 2 in the opening day of Hunger Games. I like the book and it’s addictive too but I don’t think it has the same pull as HP or Twilight.  But I wish all the best for Hunger Games
