Fox Announces Saturday Night Cartoon Block

Fox will be airing Saturday night cartoons in 2013 after network executives revealed the news on Sunday at the Winter Television Critics Association tour.

The Washington Post reports that the new Saturday night cartoon block was confirmed by Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly on Sunday at the TCAs in Los Angeles. Reilly revealed that the network will debut a 90-minute cartoon block in January 2013 that will start at 11pm and will be overseen by former Adult Swim program developer Nick Weidenfeld. The new cartoon block will also be made available online via apps and gaming platforms.

The report also indicates that Fox is aiming to compete with Saturday Night Live with new Saturday night cartoons. Obviously the move would bolster the ratings success of The Simpsons on Sunday night. With the new cartoon block on Saturday night, Fox is also hoping to duplicate the success of Adult Swim in reaching a younger demographic of male viewers.
