TV Legend Andy Griffith Dies at 86

Television legend Andy Griffith died on Tuesday morning at the age of 86 in North Carolina at his Roanoke Island home in Dare County.

WFMY News 2 in North Carolina reports that EMS were sent to the home of actor Andy Griffith where it was later confirmed that Griffith had died.

Andy Griffith became a household name in 1960 with the premiere of The Andy Griffith Show on CBS, which ran until 1968 and also starred Jim Nabors, Don Knotts, George Lindsey, and a young Ron Howard.

After notable roles in the TV remake of From Here to Eternity and Roots: The Next Generations, Andy Griffith also starred in the short-lived Salvage 1 TV series before finding long-term success in 1986 with Matlock, which ran for nine seasons.

Andy Griffith with also a Grammy award winning gospel singer.

Following the death of Andy Griffith, director Ron Howard, who grew up in Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show, shared his feelings on Twitter about the passing of a TV legend.

“Andy Griffith,” tweeted Howard. “His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations & shaped my life I’m forever grateful. RIP Andy.”
