Elena (Nina Dobrev) transitions into a vampire in The Vampire Diaries episode “Growing Pains” – The CW

The Vampire Diaries returned for a fourth season on Thursday night with the episode “Growing Pains” in which Elena inched closer to becoming a vampire.

So, how was everything in Mystic Falls?

“Growing Pains” began with the revelation that Elena (Nina Dobrev) was transitioning into a vampire while Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) blamed Matt (Zach Roerig) for Elena’s dark fate. As for Rebekah, she was back to her meddling ways as Bonnie (Kat Graham) once again dealt with the loss of a family member.

Elena, the vampire?

It was during her transition that Elena got to relive poignant memories from the past three years. However, one of the most poignant moments in The Vampire Diaries came when Damon admitted his love for Elena and selflessly let her go before forcing her to forget the confession. As you’d expect, Elena was shocked by the revelation since she chose Stefan over Damon last season.

Did Damon’s confession change anything? Despite Elena’s eventual transition into a full-blown vampire, she decided to stay with Stefan.

Grams is Back …

While Bonnie tried to help Elena before the transition was complete, Grandma (Jasmine Guy) paid a visit to her vision. She warned Bonnie that any further use of dark magic would cause irreparable damage. Leave it to Grandma to give timely words of wisdom.

Unfortunately for Bonnie, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) threatened to kill Tyler’s body (which was still inhabited by Klaus’ soul) if she didn’t act on the spell that would reverse things. With no other choice, Bonnie cast her grandmother’s advice aside and performed the spell. It was too late, however, as Grams returned to confront Bonnie. “You made your choice,” she said before disappearing again. “Now they’re taking it out on me.”

Was Grandma killed, or possibly stuck in dark magic limbo?

Seriously, poor Bonnie. Just when she gets knocked down, she gets kicked in the teeth.

Rebekah finally stands up to Klaus

The girl we love to hate! Rebekah finally realized that her dear old brother, Klaus, was nothing more than a selfish SOB. OK, he did save Carolyn from those weird vampire cops but still left a tied-up Rebekah in the van to fend for herself! We won’t soon forget

After helping Stefan and new vampire Elena escape from their cells at vampire cop headquarters, Rebekah knew there was only one thing left for her to do: end her relationship with Klaus. She destroyed the last of Elena’s blood, which would have allowed Klaus to create more vampire hybrids. In a rage, Klaus knocked his sister out. She now nothing to him. Despite her unconscious state, we know Rebekah feels the same way.
