Universal Pictures officially confirmed a theatrical release date for the action sequel Riddick that will hit both regular theaters and IMAX on September 6.

Riddick, the sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick, reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy who took on the same duties in 2004 for the first edition of the action sci-fi.

On Wednesday, Vin Diesel released a photo on Facebook of himself in character with director David Twohy.

The sequel picks up after Riddick has been left for dead on a desolate sun-bleached planet where the character of Riddick encounters various alien predators who have a taste for his flesh. Riddick’s only chance at survival is to set off an emergency beacon that will alert mercenaries of his location. In an effort to save his home planet of Furya from destruction, Riddick must use the mercenaries as help to escape.

Along with Vin Diesel, Riddick stars Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Mollà, Bokeem Woodbine, and Dave Batista.
