Actor John Stamos guest stars in The New Normal this week in the episode “Gaydar” in which the former Full House star plays an ambiguously gay realtor.
It’s not often that you can listen to John Stamos hopped-up on NyQuil while nursing a cold and trying to talk to reporters about a guest appearance on The New Normal.
That’s exactly how we checked in last week with Stamos who regaled us with stories of how he jokingly sleeps like the late Michael Jackson in an Oxygen tank to hold his ageless beauty and that Ryan Murphy once wanted him to star in a show about three hookers. Not a bad way to spend a half-hour on the phone!
In this week’s episode of The New Normal called “Gaydar”, John Stamos steps into the role of Brice, a realtor with Ellen Barkin’s Jane who can’t tell if he’s a fashionable guy or into fashionable guys.
“I’ve never played a guy where you couldn’t tell where he was at,” Stamos told reporters on a conference call ahead of this week’s episode. “Nowadays it’s so unfair, and I think that’s the point of the episode, which is that “gaydar” doesn’t work anymore. The rules don’t apply is what I think we’re trying to get at it. That’s the overall theme of the episode and the show, which is that you can’t just point to people and go, ‘You’re this or you’re that.'”
Interestingly, it’s been almost nine years since John Stamos took on a related role in the romantic comedy Wedding Wars about equal rights for gay marriage. In Wedding Wars, Stamos played a gay wedding planner who went on strike against a Governor’s negative position on same sex marriage.
But that was 2006 and we now live in 2013 with The New Normal on mainstream network television.
For Stamos, however, the issue is more personal since he was mistaken for being gay early in his career.
“There are no stereotypes anymore,” added the former star of Full House, “and I’m the perfect example. I grew up in musical theater. I grew up playing with puppets and I liked magic. I liked all of the arts and I liked musical theater. I loved doing makeup. Halloween was my favorite time of the year and I was quite good. I was a good makeup artist! And because I wanted to be in musicals so bad, I studied singing. It’s not my favorite thing to do but I can sort of get through a song if it’s in a musical theater setting because I can play the character. I even think my father at some point thought, ‘Well, okay, who cares?’ So yeah, I have been mistaken.”
Obviously the musical theater background paid off since Stamos has appeared on Broadway and last year in New Normal creator Ryan Murphy’s first hit show Glee.
So, how does John Stamos feel about Ryan Murphy and his approach to the material of all of his shows, including The New Normal?
“Ryan and I have had a great relationship for years,” Stamos continued. “And when he asks me to do stuff, I do it because I’m proud of being on his shows and I’m proud of him. I knew him before all these big shows happened. You know, he came to me right after Full House with a show about three hookers that were in fixed marriages, like Charlie’s Angels but with hookers, and it was a little too much for me at the time. But looking back I’m like, ‘Man, I should have done that.'”
But why take a guest spot on The New Normal specially to work with Murphy?
“He knows what people want. He knows how to push the envelope,” added Stamos. “He knows how to make people think. He knows how to make people think about themselves. And I should be working with this guy.”
The New Normal with guest star John Stamos airs Tuesday, January 22 at 9:30pm on NBC.
