Netflix will not be present in Cannes this year. Netflix has officially pulled out of the Cannes Film Festival because of a rule change surrounding distribution. More specifically, the new rule requires that all films have theatrical distribution, which inhibits Netflix, an online streaming service.
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, said that he wants their films to be on equal playing ground as other filmmakers. Serandos said, “There’s a risk in us going in this way and having our films and filmmakers treated disrespectfully at the festival. They’ve set the tone. I don’t think it would be good for us to be there.”
While films have been pulled from the festival, some Netflix executives will still attend to scout for potential film acquisitions on the streaming service.
